I say it every year, but I mean it. This league has gotten so much better at drafting the last few years. All four of these guys were on my list. I was hoping Szapucki or Sixto would reach me (and had an unrealistic dream that Alvarez or Vlad Jr would). Joe, I think you can say the inverse is true for trading. There have been some horrendous trades this offseason, and I'm not even talking about ones that have gotten vetoed.

Ugh! There's a Baseball America podcast? Why have I not searched for it before? I listen to nothing but podcasts while i drive to work and back each day. Usually just the Around the NFL and Bill Simmons (when he isn't talking basketball), somw other Ringer stuff, but I've also added in the Bald Move Movie podcast recently. Oh and the Mike Lombardi "Make Me Smarter" one is a good 25 minute time killer. I just added the BA to my Stitcher favorites now. Thanks for the heads up.

While you're at it, add MiLB The Show to your list too. They have a real cool podcast with interviews of prospects, scouts and experts. Those two, plus the Fangraphs podcasts are great listens.

I don't think there are such a thing as "sleepers" in this league any more. They're either "interesting" picks or "reaches."

But how much of our evaluation of trades comes from groupthink from playing together for so long? How much can be chalked up to new blood in the league with new value systems? We've turned over nearly a quarter of the league this offseason. And if you add in Nate and Mark from last offseason, that's about a third of the league. Things are going to change. New owners will get acclimated. Our evaluations of players will change. It's a fluid thing. I remember 12 years ago when people would trade draft picks at the drop of a hat. Now people probably overvalue them. With the way the owners here value their prospects, whose to say that Lee coming in and using his to win now isn't the smart move? When everyone zigs, you zag. Isn't that the key to winning? Finding market inefficiencies and exploiting them? If 29 other owners are holding onto their prospects and draft picks and overvaluing them, maybe Lee can come in and exploit that by letting us overvalue his too.

Finding market inefficiencies and exploiting them? If 29 other owners are holding onto their prospects and draft picks and overvaluing them, maybe Lee can come in and exploit that by letting us overvalue his too. I know that prospects tend to get overvalued. I have no issue dealing them, if you took a look at my trade history (and reserve roster) you would see that. I was just looking today, I did almost a complete firesale last summer, trading away Chapman, Valencia, Pineda, Wieters, Peralta, and ARod (the last four free agents to be). I got a ton of prospects and picks back (6 prospects and 3 picks). I've turned over almost all of them (4 of the prospects and 1 of the picks, in addition to 4 or 5 other prospects I had) for Simmons, Harvey, Wacha, Wheeler, and Conforto (plus a prospect). I tend to churn through prospects pretty quickly, but it gets me to where I need/want to be. Even after that firesale last summer, I reached a one game playoff to get to the postseason. Ultimately I lost to champ to be StL, but I'm happy how things went and I'm set for the next few years all around for the most part. Now that type of strategy would be foolish if I was perennially in the top 10 of the draft. There's a ton of trades made that seem to be in the vein of "Drive for 75". Teams that aren't going anywhere making a bunch of contradictory moves like trading prospects for a vet at one position, then turning around and trading a vet at another for picks or prospects. I understand with the churn there's going to be some learning and feel for the league needed, but a good trade is a good trade and a bad trade is a bad trade. Not all bad trades need to be vetoed, but they certainly do need to be mocked.

Well, he has 5 more days. Why not use them to triple check your research? I was thinking of slowing the draft all the way down too, to get it back on schedule

I'm at a trade show in Orlando and don't fly back to NY until Friday night, so I'm in no hurry for it to move quickly. I did bring a short list of potential picks, but was worried about them being gone.

I was thinking of slowing the draft all the way down too, to get it back on schedule I had 8 days to pick and I am in the process of buying a house, fixing some things up in it, and moving. So, I pretend baseball hasn't been my top priority this week. Why have assigned dates if half the league gets all upset when someone "slows down" the draft to their assigned date (which I am still 4 ahead of...)?

DANG!! I was really hoping Diaz would make it to pick 15. 2 picks away and he gets taken. Back to the research now.

Rich,
I am going to say words to you with my keyboard right now, and you are going to read these words, and reflect on them.
When my Pirates play Los Angeles this season, I am absolutely going to completely and totally decimate your rag-tag Dodgers team. Not because I even want the wins, but just to make it completely and totally clear and lucid to you that drafting a player whom I desired greatly is absolutely unacceptable.
Andrew Toles was to be a Pirate, and he will be a Pirate, and until you realize the grave mistake you have made, no mercy will be shown to you.

Tracy, take your time. I still need to narrow my list down from the four I'm looking at. I'll probably wait until my assigned day anyways.
Also, I can't make out Jimmy's avatar.

JIm (sigh) I should have known Toles would fall into your desired grinder category. It's tough to gauge these winter drafts. I really didn't think he'd be there when I picked. Some guys go upside, some go with the safer picks. Even though ZiPS for LA haven't been released Toles should get a pretty favorable projection, so there's some instant gratification there for me. After this year things could go a few different ways. If he shows the ability to hit lefties, I think he could be a pretty effective lead off or #2 guy. I think his floor is a pretty good platoon guy. Worth the risk IMO.

When Jim planned to take the guy you just took, you know you done fucked up. My drafts generate quality players, Joe. According to research from ConnorDog Industries, Inc., the Pirates have signed less free agents than any other team in NSBL- and by a considerable margin. Envy the organizational stability and consistent results while you draft your 17-year old 6-finger Latinos with the ultra-high flameout rate. JIm
