Is there a start date in place for this thing to begin?

I think we're waiting for the scheduled start, but I'm not sure why. We always start out drafts early. Maybe the 1st pick is still undecided?

I've just been waiting for the word, which Rich basically gave me today. Gonna do a little more scouting, but should have the pick up by tomorrow night if we're good to go.

A few of you know that I've been real torn between Devers and another guy. In the last 24 hours, I've gone back and forth, back and forth. As Rich said, there may be no wrong answer with those two, and I'll say that there may not be a right answer between the two.
I ultimately went with Devers because while his floor may be lower than the other guy, his ceiling is much higher. Hearing some scouts say that his bat comps with Robinson Cano. That's a lofty comparison. Supposedly his bat is very advanced for an 18 year old. The question is, where does he play in the field? Scouts are torn on whether he stays at third or moves to first or left field. If his left-handed swing can develop and get to even 80% of its ceiling, that's a problem I won't worry about.
Welcome to the Angels, Rafael Devers!

Nice pick. I expected him to go in the top 2 picks here.

Out of the players I found, he has the highest ceiling IMO. Risky? Definitely. But I need to go for the home run pick, and I think he offers that.

Devers was tops on my list. Been waiting for this draft since July 2013 when the Sox signed him. Was really hoping he'd somehow slip to me, when I was trying to firesale my team for a better pick and it backfired horrendously.
I hate picking in the 20s. Makes it so much harder to plan because every team represents a variable. I literally have no idea how far down my list I'm going to have to go.

Kinda, but not intentionally. I had 3-4 players I was seriously considering with the pick before the draft. Urshela was the only one of those guys that was close to being MLB ready. Urshela doesn't have the offensive ceiling that Devers does, but .276/.331/.473 from a 22 year old at AAA with a .977 fielding % in 98 games at 3rd is a nice consolation prize. I'm confident in Urshela's ability to stick at 3rd at the MLB level, that upped his value for me.

Draft dates have been added for each team on the official winter draft board thread. The winter draft has no clock, only designated days. Teams can pick early but are under no obligation to pick until their designated day. The draft has an official start of 1/5. Houston's draft day is 1/7. I already e-mailed him to let him know what day and that he can pick early if he chooses to.

10 days..... hopefully a gas station didn't blow up I own three stations, two of the three are down to only 3 employees working a 24/7 store, and the main station down to only 2. All because of the flu virus here in Ohio, and two employee injuries. So i'm working 18 hour days everyday covering. I'm even sleeping in the stations... Only reason took me this long. When I picked, that was my first day off in 19 days. Sorry for the delay.. Jon <---- not John

Nice pick. I expected him to go in the top 2 picks here. I thought Devers was the best prospect available in the winter draft. He's a long way away, but the swing comps to Robinson Cano make him a prospect you can dream on, which I guess I was doing when I thought I had any remote chance of getting him.

Just a couple more days, and this thing will get moving... I noticed that ATL made their pick, but it isn't shown on the top post of the thread with the other picks. I wonder if the TWINS even know it's his pick?

Yeah, Atlanta's pick didn't even show up as a new post for me. I figured it was something on my end.

Saw Jay logged in and got excited. I don't even have a pick, and I'm anxious to see who gets taken. I can only imagine those of you who still need to pick...

Given he's not very active on the board, I sent him an early morning courtesy email reminder. He responded back thanks and indicated he was aware he's up. He got plenty of time and is well within his preview to take every second of it. I just wanted to help out.....hate to see anyone miss their pick.

Oh yeah, I know he can use every second available. I'm complaining, but only because I'm anxious. I'm not complaining to try and get him to pick sooner. I'd rather a guy take their time and make sure they draft the player they want than rush and end up with a crappy player.

Changing my pick due to rule stupidity Cardinals select Yimi Garcia, 24 RP, Dodgers organization Hey Mike, missed the original pick. Who was the ineligible you tried to select (so others don't make the same mistake)

Pretty sure it was Matt Shoemaker (based on an email I got). But since he is now FA eligible, he is no longer draft eligible.

What an interesting mix of players taken so far in the draft. High upside potential, very raw and young talent, a college player and ready, or near ready players to fill near term needs. To me, this is the most unique of the winter drafts since I came in to the league. I think the mix is really showing how knowledgeable and informed the league has become. There isn't a ton of top talent out there and people are drilling down for what there is and/or filling specific needs. IMO, this will be a fun winter draft to look back on years down the road to see who unearthed a diamond from the rough.

Yimi Garcia benefitted from a total "slut" projection on Dan's part. A 120 ERA+ for a guy with a good fastball, and no secondary pitches, whose only has 10 IP in the Majors? Dan was just being a total slut there based on his own gumption.
Travis, if you could please list him as
"Garcia, Yimi (slut)"
in the roster file, so that all 29 other GMs are aware that this guy is riding a puffed up ZiPS that will not last.
Thanks,
JIm
