I'm not going to lie. The Brewers Top 10 list came out today at BA and influenced this pick. Arcia was on my short list before, but I expected to go with a different position I'm short on. Arcia's defensive reputation says ML ready. He's not the hacker most young Hispanic players are. I think this pick has a tremendous floor and value and restocks the middle infield in my minors.

I'm a little shocked that after 9 picks, the other guy I was debating taking 1st is still available. Guess it means I made the right choice???

I agree with Jim. Yimi Garcia is a slut, and so is Dan! Who needs secondary pitches when you can just slut it up on the mound?! AVILA!
Also, I just made one of the weirdest picks I've ever made in any draft in NSBL. I'm not sure I feel right about it. He was on my list as a follow last year, but I wasn't looking to draft an RP. A lot of the guys on my list won't make it thru this draft. I felt like with the ZiPS released for St. Louis that this was my only chance at Sammy T. Plus, Tuivailala is super-fun to say out loud. I am sad that I might lose a couple of players that I really covet. This pick actually gives me more money to spend this year in free agency.
I can't wait to bid on Colbert.

You're going to bid on Stephen Colbert? You goofy bastard! That's almost as absurd as drafting a guy with the last name of Tuivailala! You Avila'd yourself! (Actually, I figured he'd go by 15 or so based on the ZiPS, I just couldn't resist cracking on Sean)

I'll be hoping that Tuivailala gets to St. Louis really quick. That way, my guy Trevor Rosenthal can be restored as the SP he was intended to be. He was only used as a RP in that WS run because of innings limits. The damn guy was so good at it, they had to make him the closer. I really think he could still be a #2/3 SP, so make sure you develop Tuivailala on the fast track.

What an interesting mix of players taken so far in the draft. High upside potential, very raw and young talent, a college player and ready, or near ready players to fill near term needs. To me, this is the most unique of the winter drafts since I came in to the league. I think the mix is really showing how knowledgeable and informed the league has become. There isn't a ton of top talent out there and people are drilling down for what there is and/or filling specific needs. IMO, this will be a fun winter draft to look back on years down the road to see who unearthed a diamond from the rough. I agree, this could be the deepest winter drafts when its fair time to tell.

I am beyond shocked that Adames made it to pick 11.

I am beyond shocked that Adames made it to pick 11. I was too, but I already had Peraza and Gordon in my minor league camp, with Castro and Dozier in front of them in the bigs, so I filled a need for a potential impact OF power bat instead.

Willy Adames was one of the 4 finalists I was debating on. I knew after he made it past ATL that there was a chance I was going to have to make the tough call. My decision was ultimately made by my financial situation. Tuivailala saves me 3-5 mil in free agency by being MLB ready and a righty specialist. If the other 2 guys I was looking at get drafted (as anticipated), I'll comment on them also. Needless to say, Adames upside was very difficult to pass on. It's a great value pick at 12. He really shouldn't have been there.

After Devers, Aquino became my target. First, it was BP glowing about him, then BA, but what really caught my eye was the well respected Kiley McDaniel saying that even rival scouts were saing he's flashing 5 toolls average or better, including a 60 power projection. He's 21. 6'4" 190 lb classic RF type and the Reds claim he's the most advanced Latin hitter they've had in the organization in a long time. To me, that put him as my target. With the lack of power hitters in MLB, I hope this kid will be ready to replace Heyward for me in 2019.

Adames was tops on my "still out there" list. I had three SS on my list, but Adames was easily #1. Now that he is gone, not sure what I will do. I have about 5 players on my Tier 1 list still out there, hopefully one falls to me and maybe another will last until my first pick this Summer? We'll see.

...and actually Arcia would have been the #2 SS on my list if I'd known he was still out there. I would have bet money he was drafted last Summer. I think his glove is better than Adames, but Adames has the better bat. Both should stick at SS though, which is why Adames was ahead on my list. Sacrifice a little defense for the better bat.

Great job keeping the draft moving today, men. To wake up and see 2 more picks were made after 11PM was awesome.
With the exception of 1 or 2, the players taken so far seem a lot more geared to the young, high ceiling guys you normally see taken in the summer drafts, whereas a lot of people (myself included) often tend towards more MLB-ready guys in the winter draft.

Surprised to see Adames lasted that long and it's not like there was a bunch of questionable picks before him, if any. Good draft so far and for once I agree with jImbo, nice to see the draft pick up some speed!

I was soooooo hoping Adames would make it to me. It reminded me on the time when Profar dropped that far.
I'm ready to roll once the Tigers pick. I've got two guys in my queue.

Kinda, but not intentionally. I had 3-4 players I was seriously considering with the pick before the draft. Urshela was the only one of those guys that was close to being MLB ready. Urshela doesn't have the offensive ceiling that Devers does, but .276/.331/.473 from a 22 year old at AAA with a .977 fielding % in 98 games at 3rd is a nice consolation prize. I'm confident in Urshela's ability to stick at 3rd at the MLB level, that upped his value for me. Nice write up on him today at BP. I really like this pick and would think, based on his AAA numbers, he'll even get serviceable zips for this season. The Year Ahead: The progression has been slow and steady since signing with the organization back in 2008, but Urshela now sits on the cusp of The Show, with a legit chance at getting a look as a potential regular in the near future. The slick-fielding third baseman brings an above-average glove to the table, which, paired with his plus arm, is the lead aspect of his overall game. The 23-year-old can easily provide defensive stability to the position. The questions in the past have centered on the capabilities of the bat and whether there’s enough with the stick to provide sufficient offense at the position. The Columbian has made improvements getting more efficient with his stroke and has a knack for putting the barrel on the ball, but at times the contact does play weak and light against arms more indicative of what is seen in the majors on a regular basis. The offense can be boosted by further maturation of Urshela’s pitch selection and subsequent tightening of his strike zone to drive offerings with more consistency. A return trip to Triple-A is likely to start 2015, with a good chance the prospect can earn a call at some point in the summer if the offensive momentum continues.

Thanks for the props on the pick, Mark. Urshela doesn't get a lot of attention, hopefully he will soon. I liked the Aquino pick as well, he was on my short list of guys I hoped would make it through the winter draft.

I love the Reynaldo Lopez pick, he was high on my list. I was hoping he may fall to the summer draft, but I knew that would be like praying for rain in california...

Lopez was on my list, but not near the top. I think he becomes an RP, but if he doesn't I don't see him being better than a #3 type SP, and there are plenty of those available already that are already in the majors, or close to it.

Went with Difo over pitching. I'm not sure if he was a one year wonder, but the organization seems to be high on him for a replacement for Desmond or 2B.
If not his ZiPS are good enough to use this year as a injury replacement or if someone doesn't produce.

I guess I will move him off now.

Damnit. I knew I should've taken Boldt last summer when I was scouting him. He was my #1 target this winter. Leave it up to one of the worst GMs in the league to poach the player I wanted. I'm sure Boldt will be passed around among all The Ross Clan for middling relievers over the next couple years.

I like the O'Brien pick. He was definitely on my radar, but I am not sure where he ends up on the diamond, so I don't think I could've pulled the trigger on him.

I respect that. My backup catching options have deteriorated to nil, so I forewent (fore'goed?) some young RP help to O'Brien it. I think the one thing he has going for him defensively is a plus arm, so even if he doesn't stay behind the plate, I'm pretty sure he's going to find a spot in the field. A really glowing article just came out on him yesterday too. Looks like the D'Backs feel good about him at C, and are pushing up his time table in a big way. www.azcentral.com/story/sports/mlb/diamondbacks/2015/01/20/arizona-diamondbacks-peter-obrien-catcher-mlb/22072885/JIm

Tracy used a very aggressive font to announce his pick though. We're going to have to petition the Committee for some font limiters here. Otherwise, this place is going to be like the Wild West.
