Okay, I know we (alright, I) have left you all in the dark some when it comes to starting the season. I did procrastinate some on getting things going just because I didn't know wtf I was doing. I'm working on it now, Connor is assisting, as is Dave the guy who owns/runs Stats+ which is a third party program that most online OOTP leagues use to help run them. I'm just having an issue trying to figure out how his program is going to upload the website files to our website. I think most leagues use him for web hosting services as well that are pretty bare bones, but we have a lot more leeway and functionality with ours. I'll get this figured out hopefully by the end of the weekend though and get you all a file to upload to your copy of OOTP24 so you can start setting lineups and stuff. Then hopefully by next weekend we can run our first sim?
Do you all wanna run with it that way, or should we try like a 2 week Spring Training? I think I can schedule that. Gives us time to work out the kinks in a live session. Totally up to you all.

MLBSA is still uploading the rosters, so we're not behind as far as I'm concerned! I had to have Connor re-do ours. Something about having to have it done for my specific version of the game. It took him 21 minutes to send back. We still need to manually add a few that are retired like Albert Pujols and manually un-retire them and then add them to rosters, but essentially they're done. |

Anyone have much experience with setting up an FTP server or anything like that? That's where I'm stuck right now. Our site is hosted on GoDaddy that uses CPanel for file management.

All I know is that I’ve paid for my OOTP 24 from Steam, and have it ready to go. I assume at some point, the players and the numbers go into the magic program, and then things start happening.

I am for spring training. It works well to get players ready to play a new position - using my BNSL team as an example:
I plan to play Bo Bichette at 2B, but he is only rated at SS right now. He has all of the underlying skills to play the position, and it is further down the defensive spectrum. I will be able to max his positional rating in spring training. I don't know how long it would take to have him learn the position during the season, but it would certainly be a rough start to have him begin unrated there.

I'm not sure if there is actually a way to turn off players learning a position in OOTP. There will be some things that are different than DMB, some by choice and some by force. I think it won't end up being that much different, you were allowed to play players out of position in DMB, and if they moved down the defensive spectrum they weren't penalized, they just didn't have the adjustment/learning period that OOTP has |

There have been teams in NSBL playing players out of position for at least a few years now. I've done it on occasion, but not extreme. |

I've not found a way to prevent a player from learning a position while playing out of their "assigned" position. Of the myriad of things I don't like about OOTP, this is not one of them. It takes time for a player to learn a new position even if they have some experience there.
I have no preference regarding spring training.

At this point, I prefer just starting the real season as soon as possible. One of the big reasons I was a fan of switching to OOTP from DMB is so we wouldn't be lagging 1-2 months behind real-life MLB. I feel like GMs are a lot more engaged when our season approximates real life.
(A perfect example is the MLB Trade Deadline. If you're already amped for your real-life MLB team making last-minute moves, it makes you more likely to do the same for your NSBL team. But most seasons with DMB, we were so far behind MLB that I didn't even notice when the Trade Deadline was here.)
Maybe in future seasons when we have this new software down pat, we can fiddle with nuances like Spring Training. At this point almost a month behind, I say we just jump into the season to get caught up ASAP.

So I had a big breakthrough last night and got the FTP thing working finally. I had zero experience with FTPs before this. I've invited the other 4 committee members to the league so we can maybe try to test things real fast, and then I will send invites to everyone else. It's going to be a learning curve for everyone here, bare with us, but together we can work through the kinks.

Good evening. In MLBSA, they are on the verge of starting the season. Exporting the rosters to the FTP server has worked for *almost* everyone over there, except me. (Because of course that's what would happen.)
1. When I go to Export Team via FTP, I receive a "201 Error." In reading the OOTP Help Forums, this is apparently common in OOTP leagues, and nobody is exactly sure how to fix it. Guys offer troubleshooting suggestions, but no one seems to work for everyone.
2. Luckily, I found a workaround. The Export Team to File is failsafe, and will export you the equivalent of an MP file to your computer. You can then e-mail THAT file to a Committee member who runs our sim, and they can upload your file (as long as it works on their computer). It adds an extra step- and makes the process very similar to previous years with Diamond Mind- but it's at least a backup for GMs who can't get the direct export to work.

I normally CRUSH OOTP Go! 2023 on my iPhone 7SE, because I'm obviously pretty good at being a GM. We know this. With every other team I've used in that game (Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, etc), I'm winning multiple World Serieses within the first 5 years of taking over. Obvs. Until now. I took over Cleveland in 2022, and it's now 2028, and the following happens to me every season: 1. Next to no injuries the entire season...until September. Then I automatically lose 2 of my best players every year, without fail. I even sit almost all of my best players, and they still get injured when my Manager subs them in. 2. I suffer excruciating losses in the Divisional Round every year, and it's always to Kansas City. A.l.w.a.y.s. This year, I was up 2-0 to none, and blew the next 3. 5-run lead in Game 3, down to the last pitch in Game 4 and crappy C for Kansas City hits a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 9th to force a Game 5. Then in Game 5, I have Yohendris Gomez (5 stars in 2028) ROLLING, then my idiot manager pulls him with a 5-run lead in the 6th inning. KC then scores SEVEN runs that inning, I tie it in the 9th before my runner is thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple, then they hit a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 9th to win the series. Again. Now here's the conspiracy:As soon as I started this game with Cleveland, I promptly changed their name back to the rightful Indians. Guardians is super-lame, and probably the worst name in all of major professional sports. My guess is some lib programmer at OOTP set it so that if you change the team name back to "Indians", it will never let you even with a Divisional Series. This would not surprise me in the slightest. I will let you know how the 2029 season goes, which I may conclude before we start simming 2023 here. Muhaha, JIm |

The rosters aren't the issue, my script gets us 95% of the way there, then the other 5% isn't super time consuming by hand. Similarly with setting up league settings I think. I think the snag is how do we actually use OOTP to sim/manage the league. I'm not sure if Joe is busy, or over it, or working on it, or what. I'll try and text him tomorrow and see what's up. |

Joe's life has been busy, so he is stepping down from his "simmer" role, but he has most of the information needed to run the sim. Travis has volunteered to run the sim for the season, so we are still planning on using OOTP this year and running the sim, but the timeline is going to be bad I think. I will do my best to update as we know more. In other news, we are looking for more interested parties in joining the committee. As it stands right now, Travis will be running the sim, Sean has stepped down as commissioner but is happy to continue helping with the draft and free agency, and I am doing my best to do whatever else is necessary to keep stuff pushing forward. We have a number of former committee members/people who have been in the league 10+ years who can help with legacy stuff/ground rules/etc., but anybody who is dedicated and passionate about the league, please email any of Travis/Sean/Joe/me. Hopefully things can be smoother if/when we get up and running with OOTP, but there will be hiccups, things to add, etc., so anybody with the time, energy, and desire is welcome to step up. Sorry for the rambling post and for the delays, the tl;dr is: 1. Joe isn't going to sim, so Travis is going to do it 2. It might take a bit to get him up to speed in OOTP, as nobody is 100% sure how everything works 3. If you want to be on the committee email us or post here |

I was afraid of this going like this. The league was already hemorrhaging owners and lost a key committee member, then decided on a major platform undertaking was the fix. The thing that was really bothersome is that everyone that bought DMB last year gets a free $24.99 e-card towards purchase this year, due to last year's delay. The disc is going to be out next week. Instead, we're all going to struggle with the new format and I expect that there will be further lack of interest and more turnover, when, in reality, the only thing that was broken was the inability to retain and recruit owners.

DMB is a dinosaur and OOTP is pretty easy to figure out maybe other than the ftp stuff in the background. Its an incredibly simple program that has a lot of in depth features. If we would've stayed with dmb, I would've left. |
