I went back and forth between him, a pitcher, and looking at college guys. Nearly all of the college guys predicted to go in the first round are already on NSBL rosters so I decided that was a direction not worth looking. Decided to go hitter instead of pitcher. Of course then I just made a trade with Sean that drained two more pitchers from my roster so maybe I jumped too soon. Definitely a huge overhaul in TOR this offseason.

Not letting me log in here at work for some reason. Anyway, does the new Detroit GM know that today is his day to draft?

Not letting me log in here at work for some reason. Anyway, does the new Detroit GM know that today is his day to draft? I was talking to Ian (Arizona GM) this morning and asked him if Tim was "gripping" over his first ever draft pick in the league. Ian said yes, he was. I remember when I was getting ready to make my first pick in the league, so I'm sure Tim is going to use every bit of time. That said, I told Ian to tell Tim that I suggested he take Brad "Big Country" Eldred. Hopefully, he smiled and it relaxed his nerves. Now, if he takes my guy, I'm going to kick him in the nuts.

Mark, do you remember who your first ever draft pick was? Wasn't it like a really young OF for the Rangers or something? Trying to remember. I still remember mine in the middle of the 2004 season.

I sure do Joe. It was just shortly after taking over the franchise and I selected Guillermo Pimentel from the Mariners. I dealt him off for Rickie Weeks last summer in attempt to boost my playoff run attempt. I still have hope for him, but, now he's 20 with a full season of High A still ahead of him; not on any top 15 prospect lists. I felt much more confident with my following year (2011) pick of Trevor Rosenthal and 2012 pick Sean Nolin.

You cursed him! He fell off right after you took him, apparently. My first pick was Ethan Martin. Traded him, of course.

My first pick was LHP Aaron Miller who looked good for a couple of years but unfortunately he is now AA DH/OF Aaron Miller.
My second pick was Alex Colome who I traded. Hopefully my 3rd pick, Matt Davidson will be worth something to me this season.

In my first draft (2009) I went Dominic Brown (1.4), Martin Perez (1.18), Nick Weglarz (2.9), Jason Knapp (3.1), Alex Avila (3.24).
So far I traded Brown-Weglarz-Knapp and gotten 1 year of production from Avila. Martin Perez is looking like he could be usable soon.

I like the Mejia pick. He was a guy on my board at 1.22, and not just because I'd love to grab a player from my hometown Giants.

Well, Mejia wouldn't have made it to pick #22. He was most likely going to be my pick as well. I wanted to take another look at my list to be sure there wasn't someone else, but if pressed, Mejia was the guy.
Back to the drawing board.
Damnit, Tim.

ditto. Was on the top of my board as well and apparently wouldn't have made it.

After selecting Trevor Rosenthal and Sean Nolin in the previous two winter drafts, I decided to go back to the pitching well again. I had Burch Smith and Vincente Velasquez as my two targets, with Tim Cooney as my third option. He has really flown onto the radar after being promoted to AA, where, as a 22 yr. old, he led all Texas League starting pitchers in FIP. He posted a 9.5 K/9 and showed near elite control, walking onLY 18 in 118+ IP. He's gotten a nice uptick in his velocity and has a working 4 pitch mix. 12 of his 20 AA starts were quality starts; impressive in the hitter friendly Texas League. I don't think he'll be a #1 or #2, but he's big, durable, with a smooth delivery and not afraid to attack both RH's and LH's. He is now the #6 prospect for the Cardinals (Baseball America) and hopefully, the LHSP that teams with my other LH Sean Nolin in my future rotation after Buehrle and Rodriguez are gone.

Love the Mejia pick. I was close to taking a pitcher with my pick, thinking that Mejia had a good chance to make it to the summer and I could pick him then.
Guess not. Nice pick..

I watched a lot of my targets go off the board and instead of taking a stop gap player, I went with a young catcher who should develop nicely. Supposedly his arm is already ML quality and he's got great bat speed so I felt comfortable taking a chance on him. Its been a great winter draft so far, cant wait for free agency.

I don't know much about Vazquez and the second Mejia taken, but I considered Nay, Pentecost, and Cooney when I picked. Jankowski seems to have some pretty good wheels on him and had a decent walk rate last year. I just worry about players with no pop. I got burned by Gathright once.

Like the Pentecost pick, Connor. Given how aggressively the 2014 class has been drafted, that's nice value this late in the draft.

Pentecost was a guy I liked at the beginning of this draft, but he never really was who I projected to pick at my slot. I had been hoping to find a SS that I really liked , but I never found one, and decided to go with the best player I had on my board.

No Rays' jersey with Pentecost's name photoshopped on the back?
You're slipping, Connor. You're slipping.

Really like the Reyes pick; he was the top pitcher left on my board.

Really Like Jon's pick. Tom Windle was a guy I was hoping to snag late in the Summer Draft. Guess he wasn't as low-key as I thought.

I thought about waiting until my last hours to make my picks, just as a little bit of revenge on the Nationals, but I couldn't. I've known I was going to take Bolt with this pick since last Summer. I wanted a true CF prospect with possible 4 or 5 tool potential. Plus, with the talk going on, I am not sure that I would be able to take him early next summer. I have lots of corner outfield prospects, but no true centerfielders. I think Bolt can be a possible 20/20 guy with a decent batting average and average to plus defense in CF.

I like the Devon Travis pick. Honestly he and Pentecost were the top two on my board when I picked, but those are my two areas of depth so I went with someone else. I am surprised he lasted as long as he did too.

I came close to taking Travis last summer, but that really isn't a hole for me and I really wanted to add pitching. I was hoping he would slide to my second round pick this summer. Nice pick for this draft's Mr. Irrelevant.
