I think I'm ready to make my pick. I just don't want to start the official draft thread. I'll let a committee do that so they can edit it for each pick.
So, once I see that thread go up, that's when I will make my pick.

I really didn't expect that there would be that much consideration for anyone other than Urias for the first pick.
Good choice.

I just hate taking such a young pitcher this early. I mean, he's 17 years old. So much can go wrong between here and there. There's another pitcher I was considering who has a high ceiling, but probably with more concerns than Urias. Then there's a "safe" position player I was considering, but his ceiling isn't really high. He would've more or less filled a need. Connor and Colby convinced me that I need to take risks on high upside players, not low ceiling "safe" picks.

IF everyone develops like I hope they do, I could have a future rotation of:
Urias Shipley Doubront Turner Thompson
Of course, that's a big IF, but it's not looking too bad. Plus, I have Hader (who I'm high on), Rosenbaum, Roach, Workman, Phelps, and McGuire who could all still develop into some usable parts. I think my plan to invest heavily in young pitching is starting to look like there's a future.

I like the Urias pick. I thought about taking him last Summer, but I didn't want to yet. I knew he'd go sometime this Winter though. Just wasn't sure how high.
Now is about the time that I wish I'd been adding all the names to my prospect list that I've been reading on since last Summer. One year I will learn and do it when I read about them.

He wasn't available in the summer, was he? Last year was his first year playing in the states. I thought that meant he wasn't available then...

I'm getting old and don't remember as well, but that may have been the reason. More likely though, I hadn't gotten that far into researching him and had only read some scouting reports that piqued my interest and put him on my radar, but hadn't checked to see if he were actually draft eligible yet.

He wasn't available last season or he would have been gone. I specifically marked him for the winter draft (knowing he probably would not get to me).

Scott, I know that you technically have until 2 days after Christmas to make your selection, but it sure would be nice if you could make it a little earlier. A lot of GMs are anxious to make their picks.
Thanks,
JIm

let them be anxious JIm, is the winter draft in a hurry?

I would prefer the Winter Draft to go slower. Gives us something to do. Every year we hurry through the draft while trades are going on, and then the league comes to a near shutdown cause no one is doing anything.

Scott is working the night shift tonight. I think whenever the station has some down time, he may be making his pick. He already knows who he is going to pick, but we all know how it is when you know who you want, but in the back of your mind, you want to make sure there is no one better lol.
And I agree with Joe. I hate when the league is straight dead and there is absolutely nothing to do or discuss. (Although I am anxious to make my pick)

Really like the Khris Davis pick...
Actually didn't notice that he was unowned AND eligible until about a week ago, and i kinda figured he wouldn't make it very far.

Davis wasn't even on my radar. I totally forgot he was available. That's all right... I probably wouldn't have taken him. Being 25, I'm not sure what his upside is...

Guy had an .898 OPS in the minors, and .949 OPS debut. I'd say his upside is pretty damn high. He's just managed to avoid all top prospect lists, so not many people knew about him.

STOP THE PRESSES!
Khris Davis was not eligible to be drafted. Davis is free agent eligible, thus making him no longer draft eligible. He was born in 1987 (making him 27 in the coming season), and has five years in the minors (2009-2013). Scott has 24 hours to correct the pick:
"If a team does select an ineligible player, and another team selects after them, the offending team has 24 hours to fix their pick, failure to do so will be cause to forfeit the pick. The offending team may not try to draft the player who was selected after their erroneous pick. For example, if a team selects Player A, who is ineligible, then Players B and C get chosen by the next two teams, the offending team may not longer select Players B or C either."

Stupid late birthday...

Post by Cubbies on Dec 17, 2013 12:23:51 GMT -5
He turned 26 (by NSBL rules) this past January. It was the time in the minors this year that made him a free agent. "A player will be considered to be free agent eligible if he meets the following criteria: -Has reached 26 years of age (all birthdays are considered January 1 in the NSBL to eliminate any confusion), and either -Has played in all or parts of five different previous minor league seasons, in separate calender years (Independent Leagues do count towards minor league seasons), or -Has played in all or parts of two different previous Major League seasons. All other players will be draft eligible."

Oh yeah, I'm not arguing it. I could just see how people could get confused with the late birthday. They look at baseball-reference and see 25. I didn't look at the year...

This rule really would have came in handy two winter drafts ago. When Scott selected Gioloto (who was technically still in HS and uneligable) I jumped the gun drafting Bogarets, then after his pick was voided, which voided mine aswell. he took Bogarets right from under me....

I posted the pick then deleted it after I realized your pick wasnt valid. No way am I saying you "stole" him obviously you knew who he was. not mad about it or anything, it is what it is.
I guess if I knew the rules I shouldnt have deleted my comment drafting Xander. But I was trying to keep his name off the boards untill I officially drafted him.
And I hope you didnt try taking Giolito last winter, he was drafted the summer draft prior to that. I believe you took Jonathan Crawford last winter draft....
Oh and one more thing scott, RESPOND TO MY FUCKING EMAILS YOU COWARD!

If I'm remembering correctly, Joe advised Scott to draft Boegarts.
