Marcelo Mayer, really? Just because he's the #1 overall in mocks?

I like Jobe but not sure I like him more than some of the other guys available there. Nothing against him, just the demographic of very highly drafted high school pitchers. They're about as risky as high school catchers, "female" asian prostitutes, and reaching into the tub of popcorn while watching a movie with Jim.

Marcelo Mayer, really? Just because he's the #1 overall in mocks? Is it really that much of a reach? He was #1 on most prospect rankings board, top-3 almost everywhere. Only other options I considered were Davis (as a Pirates fan I don't trust their development, I also already have Jeffers/Hunt), Lawler (lower ceiling, higher floor), Jobe (HS arm), or Watson (I like him, but I like Mayer more).

Why was Lieter not allowed to be picked?

Why was Lieter not allowed to be picked? Already taken by MIN in a previous year.

Amen 100%. I strongly factor in which real-life organization has a player that I'm interested in drafting. If the Pirates do, I stay away without a second thought, regardless of how highly-touted that player appears to be. JIm

I wouldn't be either. There is a *chance* that things are changing for the better, at least in terms of organizational development, now that GM Ben Cherington is in his 2nd year. As Brian can tell you, he quickly skyrocketed the Pirates' farm system ranking from bottom 10, up to as high as 3rd in some reports. However, the majority of that is based off of the influx of prospects he acquired from other teams while having an epic firesale, rather than the Pirates successfully, internally developing players.
Still, at least now there is hope.

I like that Khalil Watson pick. I've made half-hearted attempts to move up for the last couple picks and he would've been my target. I, like most prospect hounds, was pretty shocked when he slipped IRL since there was a chance for him to go 1-1.

I like all of these picks! Kinda made it so it's harder for me to make a selection :/
I guess I'll entertain the idea of moving down. If anybody wants to move up to snag a guy, e-mail me in the next few hours. Otherwise I'll make my pick sometime this evening when I'm off work and have time to do some last minute research between 3 guys.

With House and Cowser off the board, the easy work is done. Consensus top 8 are gone. Now things get interesting.

I'm pretty sure I just had the first major reach of this year's draft, but at the end of the day, the other 2 guys I was considering just had too many question marks for me which outweighed Garcia's lack of elite upside. I usually chase upside, but I wasn't in love with any of the available players and Garcia's current performance was enough to get me to bite. I've made a couple of these picks before (Tommy Milone, Mike Fiers, Corey Kluber, Cody Anderson, Joe Biagini, Nick Pivetta) but mostly in the 4th round, and you can see the level of success is quite variant. Hopefully Garcia this early turns closer into Corey Kluber as opposed to falling to the wayside like Cody Anderson and Joe Biagini.

Sorry for the delay in my pick. I kept refreshing the page, but somehow Joe made the Committee pick for STL without the "New" icon appearing for Summer Drafts. Took me a while to realize he made the pick.
Can't pass up the 6'6" college RHP that can hit triple digits. Surprised he fell so far in the MLB draft as well.

Did Charles (new STL owner) leave? Or just abstain from making his pick?

Did Charles (new STL owner) leave? Or just abstain from making his pick? I was told he gave the old Irish Goodbye. Which I had to Google to find out meant left without telling anyone.

Damn. Harris was the other guy I was hoping to slip to me in a few picks.
If anybody wants to move in to pick 22, hit me up. I'm open to anything, trade downs, picks next year, or players who can help my team this year (corner OF better than my Harrison Bader/Franchy/Brad Miller combo, or good RPs).

I'm not super excited about Ford. HS catchers are risky bets... but he's supposedly super athletic and a good hitter, so if nothing else, he should be able to stick at a different position if the defensive skills aren't there. I figure the 19th pick is a safe spot to take that risk.

I was sitting at 1:25 and annually hoping for someone to slip down the draft and fall to me. Michael Harris was that target for me this year. I think that's the most underrated pick of the draft so far. Hat tip to Detroit.

Aside from Shane Bieber, I've had less than stellar results in selecting SP in the first round. So, I decided to go with Zavala, one of the youngest college bats. The guy can flat out hit (.392 .525 .628 1.154) and he's done it in a very tough conference (PAC 12). I don't know if the power will come, but he's young and shows amazing awareness at the plate. If nothing else, this seems more intriguing to monitor than taking a SP again. Tough to comp him, but the scouts say a Brandon Nimmo-like player. I would take that.
