JONATHAN PAPELBON - SP - Cleveland Guardians - Class of 2020Jonathan Papelbon debuted as a starting pitcher, winning the 2007 Cy Young before transitioning to a high usage closer. He spent 12 seasons in the league, playing for 7 teams (CLE/STL/TEX/TB/PHI/COL/NYM). He made four All-Star teams, won two Reliever of the Year awards, and won the 2009 World Series as the closer for Cleveland. As a starting pitcher, he won the 2007 Cy Young award, going 16-4 with a 2.93 ERA, using a combination of pinpoint control (1.6 BB/9) and keeping the ball in the ballpark (0.7 HR/9). Soon after he moved to the bullpen, locking down 20 or more saves every season between 2008 and 2014. He won the 2010 and 2011 Reliever of the Year awards on the back of a league leading 41 save campaign in 2010 and a stellar 2.02 ERA in 79.2 IP in 2011 while securing 25 saves as a 30 year old. His early 30's saw him leave Cleveland where he had his best seasons, and jump around between 6 teams in his final 6 years. After 5 post-peak seasons, he retired after a late career peak season, throwing 63 innings of 1.43 ERA ball for the 2017 Rays, succeeding with the same formula as his early Cy Young award (1.7 BB/9, 0.3 HR/9). He enters Cooperstown with a career 69-69 record, 3.59 ERA, and 228 saves, 3rd most all-time as his time of retirement.

This is another fringy candidate for me. The Cy Young + 2 Reliever of the Year trophies is kind of what pushed it over the edge IIRC, but looking back I'm not sure if I would have made the same decision; just not enough longevity at a high level.

Crazy that he won a Cy Young. I don't ever remember Papelbon being a starter IRL.

Crazy that he won a Cy Young. I don't ever remember Papelbon being a starter IRL. He was as a prospect (and BOS debated reverting him to SP in the big leagues a couple times I think, but he just wasn't as effective, sort of like CIN with Aroldis Chapman), so he got SP ratings for a while. That said, Chad Green has been a Cy Young contender the last couple years so you don't necessarily need to be a starter IRL to be one in the sim.....
