heheh nice one Jim. reinforce a topic of discussion that really should've been addressed months ago. : ) Ohtani was sent to free agency. Moncada was drafted. so you're guess is as good as mine. The old rule was that no player was eligible for anything until they had played in the States. If they played in the majors, they'd be a free agent. If they only played in the minors, they would be draft eligible. Ohtani started in the majors while Moncada spent all of 2015 and almost all of 2016 in the minors. There was a big difference between the two players. The only comparable trait was they were both international signees. Their paths were quite different though.

but one would have to make an assumption of playing time. It was assumed Ohtani would start in majors. Making assumption of playing time, in my opinion, is not grounds for solid rules. like the previous concept of a player signing a "major league deal", when the concept of major league deal was done away with. they were different Moncada got to sign a massive deal, and Ohtani was forced to play for league minimum. Moncada actually made the majors younger than Ohtani did (22), I would assume Ohtani, too, would started in the minors if he signed earlier, but thats an assumption. Were major league deals done away with?

It was based on the previous season. You're thinking of MLBSA that used to leave it up to the committee to decide who was a free agent and who got drafted. Here it was a steadfast rule that would likely still be in place if not for the changes to the minors. There was nothing arbitrary or left to decide. Twas based on the actual events.

Please enjoy this:
I drafted the wrong guy last night. I skipped the player who was ahead of Smith on my list because I was distracted. I like Smith but oh what an ass I am.
Fire away please.... I deserve any ridicule I get.

I mean he has a pretty good rating for this year (97 era+) but, still, how does one make mistakes like this?
Several excuses I can use.. all of which are not valid:
1. I was texting with Brian about something completely unrelated... this can distract any man.
2. I am still confused by the trade I made with Joe.
3. Hayes and Joe had texted me during the day, which may have thrown me off.
4. The second covid vaccine had a much-delayed effect on my mental state.
5. I was looking at Oriole projections and that would make any hometown fan distracted.
6. I have been married 21 years.
7. I am pretty sure JJ Watt will sign with Cleveland instead of Baltimore.
8. I really miss classic pro wrestling.

9. You traded pick 2.2 to Joe while I was politely waiting for a counter-offer from you which never came.
Muhahaha,

Ian, if that's who you were going to pick after all this time, you could've just typed "Terd Ferguson" into the Winter Draft thread days ago, and saved us all a few days. Dang. I was expecting something spectacular given the build up. JIm

I thought he'd be a little more radioactive given the TJ. Good pick. Might end up being a great value. I was just too afraid to lose Tink. Damn it! Why'd he have to have the best name in the 2020 draft?!

1. I love Tampa Bay's track record of developing prospects. I absolutely draft guys based on what real-life organizations they are in (which is why I never, ever draft actual Pirates' prospects), so in that regard, Ian taking a Rays' prospect is super-smart and safe.
2. With that being said, I just don't see anything that excites me there. With the missed season, dude is going to be 24, and has only pitched a handful of games at A+- with a 5.06 ERA to boot. I think you can excuse a high ERA if the peripherals- BB/9, K/9- are lights out, but they seem pretty middling to me.
If Strotman can make the MLB club, and finish with an ERA+ of over 100 as a SP, I will send Ian $100K in the sim. (And considering the annual dumpster fire that is my salary cap, that means more from me than most.)

JIm I'm betting on: 1) His continued rehab 2) His workload increasing since he hasn't pitched in forever 3) His current pitches getting better 4) Him maybe adding a pitch 5) The Rays But I don't feel great about any of those bets, since he is old for a prospect and hasn't pitched much in 2.5 years. Seems like Sean loves him more than I do already. I said to Joe today that in 3-4 years, he'll either be out of baseball as a failed reliever OR a really good starter. It's a lottery ticket pick for sure, but it's definitely different than other lottery ticket picks. Some people prefer to bet on toolsy outfielders that can't vote yet. I prefer to bet on the Rays development group. In other news, Terd Ferguson is how I refer to my kids. So I appreciate your cynicism.

Drat. I am flustered by Ian's well-worded, patient response. I was trying to bring the draft sizzle to his doorstep, and he met me there with a welcome basket of fine jams and jellies.
Damn you, Ian. Damn you.

The rules got modified this year. Any international prospect signed during the previous J2 signing period (2019 or earlier) is eligible even if they don't play stateside. My pick will be posted soon.

I've been vocal telling people that I am more prepared for this draft now that I've picked than I was before I picked. But at least four guys I wish I had taken instead of who I did just went off the board in Canterino, Strotman, Gomez, and Urbina.

Great pick, Connor. Santos was the other guy I was leaning towards with my pick.
Thought we were close enough to the end of the draft that I foolishly started to think he might last until June. Well done.

You guys can both praise/curse Matt, as I was about to pick a different player until he said he'd take Santos (who I had forgotten was available) over him.
