That was one hell of a post.
People who dismissed the un-originality of VII by saying fans "needed" a tribute film to get Star Wars going again were probably surprised how many recycled scenes Johnson continued to use in 8. Kylo Ren killing Snoke in his throne room and siding with Rey was Vader killing the Emperor in his throne room and siding with Luke. The fleet trapped in space was like the Rebel fleet trapped in front of a fully-operational battle station in Jedi. The battle on the salt planet of Crait is just like the Hoth battle, right down to small guns, soldiers in the trenches, and an undermanned fleet trying to take down huge AT-ATs.
I also question what the plan is. For 2 movies straight, they've just taken the best parts of previous films, and re-combined them in different orders.
I too have thrown my lot entirely towards the spin-off films at this point. Not only was Rogue One phenomenal, but after Disney's musical chairs of directors, Ron Howard is putting the finishing touches on the Solo film. And Ron Howard has proven that he knows what the hell he's doing.
Brian, I will only disagree with you on Snoke's death. I liked the creativity, because I couldn't envision another way Ren and Rey could kill such a powerful Sith. I like that Kylo Ren used his occlumency (one of many Harry Potter references) against him. I just hated how Johnson gave ZERO backstory on Snoke, despite that being one of the things most fans were looking forwards to.
Now, Abrams either has to do some awkward flashback or back-from-the-death thing to explain Snoke, or just go LOST-style, and pretend it never happened.

I wish you got to see the Holiday Special on TV, like a 19" TV with dials to change the channel and rabbit ears with foil on them... I did. I’m old. Not Texas Mark old, but old just the same.

As hit as Natalie Portman is, her performance was 100 times worse than HC. Watching again with a critical eye convinced me more that he did the best he could with what he was given.

Anakin was supposed to be somewhat of an overly-powerful, conflicted, entitled d-bag, and I think he pulled that off perfectly. I think fans were still furious by how terrible Jake Lloyd was, and that carried over to Christiansen by default. Ewan McGreggor shined in those movies. If they ever do a rumored Obi-Wan spinoff with him, I'm all in. JIm

I think Portmans performance was a bad actor director. He just can't direct people... but There are pieces of HDs performance that no director could save. as I said earlier, the only thing I saw him in that was any good was Life as a House with Kevin Klein. He's Brien Taylor to me.
McGregor makes Obi-Wan my favorite non-Qui-Gon character... ; )

I would encourage folks to listen to Ben's Channel 33 episode about the dry-years of Star Wars, and then his Ringer Video Game podcast where they discuss this film. I think they are both very good. The video game podcast is very long so fast forward through to the Star Wars piece.
Channel 33 is really interesting, I didn't realize the impact that the RPG had in the universe building.

I still haven't read this thread, and I scrolled to the bottom this time. I plan to go with the wife to watch Episode 8 tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to it. I started to re-watch Episode 7 last night and I'll finish it tonight. I am also a big Rian Johnson fan, as he wrote and directed one of my favorite movies of all time (Brick) and I've seen just about everything he's done.
After I see the movie, then I will go through and read and respond to this thread.

It's Star Wars. I wanted to eat popcorn, shut off my brain and have fun. I thought the movie was a great success. I didn't pay heed to any of the problems, I just wanted to enjoy the ambiance of the SW Universe.
Now I read Jim's post showing the man behind the curtain and realize how stupid most of it was. He's right, as written it sucks. As produced, it's still beautiful recreation. Any time I can live in the Star Wars universe of my childhood, that is incredible. Episodes 1-3 completely failed on that mark. These 3 new movies have been outstanding successes.

I think that was a good way to sum it up, Trav. Even though I thought it had too much cuddly animal placement and too many one liners, I really enjoyed it.
Then I read Jim's review. He's done his best to ruin the movie. Way to be the turd in the punch bowl, Jim. You're a real crotch-punch.

I finally went to see this over the weekend and then decided to read this thread. I enjoyed the movie, probably the 2nd best movie (Rogue One) since episode VI. Two plus hours of entertainment and expansion of the Star Wars universe. I really did not enjoy this thread, 5 plus minutes of my life I will never get back.
I have no idea what to expect in the next episode now with all but Lea gone (and the actress now gone), the rebels thoroughly decimated yet the 1st Order is effectively rudderless, yes they have a character to be the villain but he does not have the personality to be a leader. I know Ren and Rey have to go up against each other but I wonder what the direction for the rest of the movie will be since both Snoke and Luke are now gone.
