So, as I was pasting all the old drafts onto the message board here, I decided that I wanted to compile a list of all my draft picks since the league started, just to get a big picture of how I do. Consensus says I am very hit and miss. You can tell that for a few years there I traded a lot of picks to try to compete, and it didn't work out too well for me 2004 Summer Jason Stokes 1B Justin Verlander SP Phil Humber SP Mike Hinckley SP Joey Gathright OF
No real record of this draft exists to my knowledge, but I remember taking the above players. I am still kicking myself for that Stokes pick. I needed a 1B of the future and Sean told me he was it. I didn't know anything about prospects back then. I remember wanting this A-ball pitcher in the Mariners organization with the first pick, but I figured since he was only A-ball, I could get him in round 2. Nope, Kansas City snatched up Felix Hernandez in the middle of the first round. I did good with Verlander though. And I don't regret the Humber pick because I thought he would be awesome. Part of that Rice Trio from the 2004 MLB Draft. Hinckley ended up getting injured, but was a solid pick at the time. And Gathright is still a pick I will defend. Speed and defense with a good ability to put the ball in play. But he does suck.
2005 Summer 1.04 Huston Street RP 1.18 Rich Hill SP
Well, Street turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I kept him for a few years, maybe 4 or so? Then traded him off. Rich Hill did what I wanted him to do for a season, then I remember trading him to Tampa I think. Got back Gio Gonzales and Jonathan Sanchez in that trade if I remember correctly. I don't remember what I traded all my other picks for. Probably beans or something shiny.
2006 Summer 1.20 Tim Lincecum SP
Well, if you're only going to get one pick out of 100+ in the draft, you better draft a two time Cy Young Award winner, right? Can I still classify this draft as a success?
2007 Summer 1.28 Carlos Villanueva SP/RP 1.45 Tony Abreu 2B
Believe it or not, this is the timeframe when I researched the hardest and the most for prospects. Villanueva was a floor pick, and I admit that. I was trying to compete that season (finishing 5 out of the WC) and CV had decent numbers on the disk already. He did well for me that half season if I remember correctly. Ended up trading him to Washington the following offseason or the one after.
2008 Summer 2.13 Chris Coghlan 2B 2.14 Michael Brantley OF 2.15 Jonathan Lucroy C 3.13 John Mayberry Jr. OF 3.14 Michael Burgess OF 3.19 Clayton Richard SP
Well, those first three picks have done me pretty well. I hit on all three, even though Coghlan has been plagued with injuries and inconsistency IRL. He still won ROY, so I consider that a good pick. And was still simming decently for me as recently as last season. Useful bench bat on the sim in 2013 I hope. Lucroy turned out much better than I expected, but Brantley I expected to steal more bases than he does. The other two guys are dead to me.
2009 Summer 1.17 Trevor Reckling SP 2.14 Freddie Freeman 1B 3.03 Mike Leake SP 3.11 Zach Cozart SS
Three outta four ain't bad, right? Cozart and Freeman are both starters for me, and Leake is a nice back of the rotation/relief option. I traded Reckling to Tampa the following offseason for something or other. I just remember Connor wanted either Reckling or Leake, so I gave him Reckling. I made the wise decision.
2009 Winter 1.14 Danny Espinosa 2B
Happy with this pick. Danny is still one of my favorites. It was either him or Cozart when I picked the previous Summer, so I was happy to end up with both of them. They now make up my Middle Infield.
2010 Summer 1.14 Yasmani Grandal C 2.14 Nolan Arenado 3B 3.14 Jackie Bradley Jr OF
I'm happy with all three of these picks. Grandal, despite missing the first 50 games of 2013, looks like he could be a top catcher still. Arenado has lost some of his prospect luster, but is still a Top 50 prospect who has improved his defense since I drafted him, and Bradley Jr has turned out to be everything I really wanted. Although I thought he might have a little more pop when I drafted him, but that was the 'college aluminum bat' illusion.
2010 Winter 1.28 Matt Packer SP
Ummm, yeah. Mulligan? I guess he may still end up as a decent RP. I need to learn to rely on scouting a little more and Hi-A numbers a little less.
2011 Summer 1.28 Liam Hendricks SP 2.28 Blake Swihart C 3.28 Brian Goodwin OF 4.28 Cody Buckel SP
Drafted for floor with the first pick, and it looks like that's what I am going to get. Swihart is still an unknown, but it's not often you can draft decent prep players from your home state, when your home state is NM. And I still love the Goodwin and Buckel picks. Buckel was my planned 4th round pick before the draft even started. My sleeper. It paid off nicely this last season, even though he struggled in AA some. I think he can still be a #3 or 4 type SP.
2011 Winter 1.29 Chris Beck SP
In my defense, Beck was being rumored as a possible Top 10 MLB pick for 2012 when I took him here. He just didn't have a great college season and fell to the second round I think. Maybe I should just stay away from pitchers in the Winter Draft.
2012 Summer 1.29 Alen Hanson 2B 2.04 Luis Heredia SP 3.27 Adam Conley SP 3.30 Joey Gallo 3B 4.04 Zach Eflin SP
Really too early to tell with any of these guys, but I did go mostly ceiling in this draft. I like the fact that I stole two of the best available Pirate prospects from Brian though. Totally made the draft worth it for me!
2012 Winter 1.14 Trayce Thompson OF

And yes, I realize that if I put my mind to something worthwhile, instead of wasting it on this damn league, that I could probably do great things in life. I spent well over an hour compiling and writing this.
I need a life.

Or are you really bumming about missing out on either a replacement level shortstop 3 years removed from retirement, a 16 year old C/1B that nobody had likely ever heard of (or has ever heard of today), or a 21 year old OF who was 3 years away from making his rookie ball debut?

[/b] Dylan Bundy[/b][/pre][/quote] I wish you picked 1.03, but alas, Bundy ended up being pick #1.02. In quite possibly the move I regret most in my 4 years in the league, I was overly greedy/cocky and believed Jeff was on Bubba Starling (seeing his penchant for toolbox CFs) so I swapped 1.02 for 1.03 and some peanuts on top. Instead of going with Starling (the number 2 talent on my board at the time), he went ahead and took Bundy (the number 1 talent on my board), who has turned himself into one of the most exciting to watch prospects I've seen, while I hopped around the 1st round like a monkey on cocaine, eventually settling in at pick 1.10 and taking Starling. Ah well, at least I still sniped Anthony Rendon from the A's the year before, although that was pure luck; I had penned not Jeff, but the Dodgers in on Rendon (seeing as he already showed he wasn't scared in taking a college talent that winter by snagging Anthony Ranuado).

Year Pick Player Name Pos. 2009-S 1.04 Domonic Brown OF 2009-S 1.18 Martin Perez LHP 2009-S 2.09 Nick Weglarz OF 2009-S 3.01 Jason Knapp RHP 2009-S 3.24 Alex Avila C In my first draft in this league (and really the first time I’ve ever evaluated prospects besides “I like this guy” and “I don’t like this guy”). I was really excited about Dom Brown and traded up to snag him. He was killing the upper minors, with crazy upside due to his combination of raw upside, while still managing to put up big offensive numbers due to his ridiculous athleticism. He hasn’t become the star I hoped he would, but I used him to land Josh Johnson, so all in all it ended up working out. I still like him as a bat first corner OF type, but his athleticism didn’t play into the defensive monster I used to dream about. The rest of the draft I would classify as a success, mostly due to Alex Avila emerging as an above average big league Catcher. Martin Perez has reached the majors and is a good bet to be a contributor as a mid-rotation guy to my team, but he may longer have the ace upside that he had during this draft. Nick Weglarz was a bat first guy who no longer has all that exciting of a bat and was used to help get Jon Lester. Jason Knapp was a high upside play whose career has been wrecked by injury; a real shame, I really loved the electricity in his arm. He was traded to the White Sox last year. Alex Avila has grown from 5th round pick selected more because of his dad’s relationship with the team than his skillset, yet he’s grown into one of the better young catchers in the league. Year Pick Player Name Pos. 2009-W 1.10 Ryan Westmoreland OF Before the 2010 season even began, Westmoreland had brain surgery. Before that happened, he was an absolute monster on both sides of the ball, a true 5 tool stud. I still hold onto him with the hope that he can regain even 50% of that crazy upside he had at the time I drafted him, because he really was looking like he could emerge as a special player. Year Pick Player Name Pos. 2010-S 1.06 Anthony Rendon 3B 2010-S 1.29 Gerrit Cole RHP 2010-S 3.02 Jason Kipnis 2B 2010-S 3.20 Kyle Heckathorn RHP 2010-S 3.22 Robbie Erlin LHP Probably my best draft so far. Anthony Rendon has an exciting mix of current skill and unknown upside on both sides of the ball, while Gerrit Cole’s arm arguably has the highest upside amongst players yet to appear in the big leagues. Jason Kipnis has stepped forward as an above average 2B at the major league level, with the potential to become a top-3 player at the position, with an intriguing power-speed mix offensively, and improving reliability and range defensively. Kyle Heckathorn never became the control artist/GB machine I hoped he would grow into, but he still seems a good bet to be a useful late inning reliever, who could be stretched out in a crunch. He was also moved last season. Robbie Erlin was a guy I drafted more because of my personal relationship with him since my little league days, but he too has blossomed into an exciting young prospect, who should get a shot with the Padres at some point this year. Year Pick Player Name Pos. 2010-W 1.07 Trey McNutt RHP Why oh why didn’t I go with the offensive player I was toying with taking here? Two picks after selecting McNutt, a personal favorite of mine was picked, Jurickson Profar. Regardless, what’s done is done, and although McNutt may not be the #2 starter I hoped he would become, he still has upside as a potential closer or late inning reliever and was moved last year in some deal for somebody. Year Pick Player Name Pos. 2011-S 1.10 Bubba Starling OF 2011-S 1.16 Archie Bradley RHP 2011-S 3.04 Mark Appel RHP 2011-S 3.16 Tom Milone LHP 2011-S 4.07 Jake Barrett RHP The Bubba Starling fiasco was noted above, and now he’s no longer part of my team, moved to Baltimore bringing back personal favorite Christian Villanueva and picks. Archie Bradley has ace upside and is one of my favorite arms in the low-minors, while everybody knows Mark Appel’s history given both the rumors of him going 1.1 in last years draft, and then the decision to go back to Stanford for a senior year. Tom Milone was the first player I drafted to receive time on my team (16th player drafted=1st to receive playing time), and looks like a good bet as a control-artist mid rotation starter. Jake Barrett had a disappointing senior season at ASU, showcasing a future in the bullpen, where he has bullpen ace potential. He was traded last year and is now a member of the Angels. Year Pick Player Name Pos. 2011-W 1.07 Rymer Liriano OF Ryme-time has explosive upside with raw power, plus speed, and a cannon for an arm. I am dreaming on him turning into a J.D. Drew type player with above average abilities all around, but he is still pretty raw at the current time. Year Pick Player Name Pos. 2012-S 1.06 Carlos Rodon LHP 2012-S 2.29 Jose Vinicio SS 2012-S 3.09 Phillip Ervin OF 2012-S 3.29 Bobby Wahl RHP 2012-S 4.07 Matthew Smoral LHP 2012-S 4.16 J.O. Berrios RHP 2012-S 4.21 Michael Fiers RHP The jury is still out on all of these guys. The first 6 selections were typical high upside picks, while Michael Fiers joined Tom Milone as the 2nd player I’ve drafted to receive playing time (25th player drafted = 2nd to receive playing time) Year Pick Player Name Pos. 2012-W 1.18 Trey Williams 3B OH MY GOD WHAT WAS I THINKING THIS WAS SUCH A TERRIBLE PICK. Just kidding, way too early to tell, really like his skillset though.

I've never looked back to see how the draft went for the Reds before I took over but seeing the 2009 winter draft and how the pick was skipped with a guy like Trout on the board still sucks. Can't say it's a given I would of picked him but none the less, he was still there. The 2010 summer draft was decent but Whitson went to college and became a more long term development and with the way the team was constructed at that point I decided to move him instead of sitting and waiting. Now for a look at my drafts:
2010 Winter Draft 1.22 Anthony Rizzo
After watching a ton of talent come off the board in my first draft, I took Rizzo who posted a good season after coming back from cancer. He tore it up in the minors to start 2011 and got the call up to SD but played horrible. He couldn't hit lefties and after fixing his swing in 2012 he came up and produced at the major league level. Should be a cornerstone player for years to come.
2011 Summer Draft 1.22 Alex Meyer 1.24 Brandon Nimmo 4.22 Marcus knetcht
Not to be confused with John Mayers brother, I was glad to grab Meyer. He's put up good numbers so far and should at least be a mid rotation starter or good bullpen arm. The size issue is scary but he's progressed well so far. Nimmo is a 5 tool guy I wanted to patrol cf. He's really young and did a good enough job in is first year of pro ball. Might need to shift to a corner spot which would hurt but still way too early to tell. I flipped knetch for Sizemore and a 4th so it was a wash to me.
2011 Winter Draft 1.1 Carlos Martinez
I love Carlos but moved him for the best hitter in the game. I'll take a Future HOF player in his prime over any prospect.
2012 Summer Draft
1.3 Drew Smyly 2.1 Welington Castillo 3.1 Josh Rutledge 3.3 JR Graham 4.26 Michael Fulmer
I knew I gave up on a lot of high ceiling talent to take some guys but 3 out of 5 of these guys will be on my ML roster opening day 2013 and I moved Graham in a swap for Ellsbury so this draft netted me 4 starters in the upcoming season. Smyly and Rutledge had success in rl I the bigs and should be at least serviceable starters for awhile to come. Grabbed Welington to have a catcher in 2012 since I was getting no production from that spot and he simmed way better than I thought he would. I was sad to move Graham since I love his stuff but still happy with Fulmer for now.
2012 Winter Draft
1.5 Bruce Rondon
He'll be given a chance to close in rl this year for the Tigers and depending on his zips will probably be in my pen as well this season. He tore up the winter leagues and there's no question he can handle closing only question is how his stuff translates to the bigs.
With a good young core I can probably go to a more draft and follow strategy instead of trying to plug holes cost effectively with draft picks. All in all I've been pretty happy with my picks so far and what they've developed into or enabled me to add to my team. It's been a ton of fun and I look forward to many more years of it.

2005 1.05 Brandon McCarthy 1.07 Brian McCann 1.08 Hayden Penn 1.12 Billy Butler 1.13 Dustin Pedroia 2.08 Jon Lester 3.06 Ryan Garko Will have to see on some of these guys what I got for trade to see how well they worked out. McCann is the only one still with the team and has been great throughout his career for the Jays. The rest have been traded at different points, with Penn and Garko being the only two not amounting to much I say a success rate of 5/7 is pretty good and could be higher depending on what I got for Garko/Penn. 2006 1.04 Nick Adenhart 1.05 Tom Gorzelanny 1.06 Matt Kemp 1.17 Matt Murton S1.06 Kevin Kouzmanoff 3.13 Elvis Andrus 3.19 Jeff Bianchi 2006 wasn't as good as 2005 which isn't surprising considering the talent wasn't as good. Adenhart I still believe was going to be great before the terrible car accident. Gorzy has been solid for me as a long man/left out of the pen. I kept the wrong OFer (D Young vs M Kemp). Murton was solid for two seasons, I remember getting something decent for Kouz. Andrus contributed well for the Jays and brought a good return. And, I have to thank Sean for taking Bianchi. I think he was the only other guy as excited about him as I was. 2007 1.03 Clay Buchholz 1.06 Travis Snider 1.21 Chase Headley 2.08 Johnny Cueto Very happy with these picks, 2007 had a great return, need to see the old trade board to see what I got for them. All 4 of these guys were traded. 2008 1.30 Jordan Walden S1.13 Michael Saunders 2.30 Ivan DeJesus S2.02 Gorkys Hernandez 3.30 Sean Doolittle 2008 is one of, if not my worst draft. Doolittle might end up being the best of this group. Not a single one is still on the team. 2009 1.09 Jenrry Mejia 1.15 Jeanmar Gomez S1.01 Casey Kelly 2.05 Josh Thole 2.15 Lance Zawadzki 2.21 Daniel Hudson 3.05 Chris Heisey W1.18 Simon Castro Still hold out hope on Mejia, but he has moved on as has Gomez, Kelly, Castro, Heisey (this season). Hudson and Thole are the only two still on the team and are important contributers. I was very high on Zawadzki, sad to see his issues keep him from playing. First winter pick turned out terrible. 2010 1.18 Brennan Boesch 1.23 Nick Castellanos 3.12 AJ Cole 3.18 Austin Wilson 3.25 Joseph Gardner W1.29 Yorman Rodriguez Boesch contributed for a year. Was able to trade Cole/Gardner/Rodriguez in different deals for good return. Still holding Wilson/Castellanos and have high expectations for both. My Winter pick is again terrible. 2011 1.21 Jedd Gyorko 1.29 Joe Wieland 4.29 Chun-Hsiu Chen W1.27 Taylor Green Three of the four are still on the team and I believe Gyorko/Wieland/Chen all hold future value for the Jays. Green provided what I needed at 3B until I acquired Encarnacion and then helped in a trade this offseason. Happy with all four picks to this point. 2012 1.07 Jorge Bonifacio 1.18 Rougned Odor 1.27 Aaron Sanchez 2.09 Brad Miller 2.27 Eugenio Suarez W1.29 To early to tell on these guys as none will contribute this year and probably not next year. Very high on each of them. I believe two of the five have star potential and the other three can be solid regulars. We will see what the winter pick turns out to be, but my track record so far on winter picks hasn't been good.

What the hell, I'll play along.
2009 Summer Draft:
1.36 - Ethan Martin SP 3.27 - Scott Sizemore 2B
I was in full win-now mode, so I remember dealing a couple picks to get some rental players. I loved Martin, and was pretty sad to deal him. Even more upset now that he's having a type of rebirth in the Phillies org after stagnating with the Dodgers. Sizemore was a definite homer pick (being a Tiger fan and all), but if I remember right, he helped to net me a decent player in trade.
2009 Winter Draft
1.17 - Wilkin Ramirez OF
This pick was made for two reasons: 1) He's a Tiger, and 2) I was in win-now mode with little cap room to work with, and he was a cheap number 4 outfielder. He's still with me, and actually simmed fairly well last year. Still, I hate looking at a few of the guys taken after this pick (Freese and Trout, mostly).
2010 Summer Draft
1.17 - Deck McGuire SP 2.17 - Travis d'Arnaud C 2.23 - Bryce Brentz OF 3.23 - Sonny Gray
Loved this draft when it happened. I remember that I was under the gun and forced to pick quickly with the McGuire pick, so I took him because he was "safe." Just goes to show that no baseball prospect is actually safe. Gotta have a big year this year in the minors to get back to prospect status. I feel I stole d'Arnaud, as everyone seemed to think he was taken the year before when his brother Chase was drafted. Brentz and Gray were local picks, as I watched both of them play a few times here in the mid-Tennessee area. I said at the time that all Brentz does is hit, and he's proving that in Boston's system. Still high on him to turn into a slugger, and potentially a middle of the order type of bat. Big fan of Gray, but again, was in win-now mode and eventually dealt him for a player.
2010 Winter Draft
1.27 - Daniel Descalso 2B
Again used the winter draft to acquire a cost effective player to put right into my lineup. Spent two years as a decent second baseman for me before trading him not too long ago.
2011 Summer Draft
4.27 - Felix Doubront SP
Dealt all picks that were allowed to be dealt trying to win the World Series (made it to the ALCS). My system was very pitching thin, and I wanted to find a lefty starter that I could use in 2012. Mission accomplished. Has the potential to be a back-end of the rotation starter for a few years. Not upset with this pick at all.
2011 Winter Draft
1.21 - Lucas Duda OF
Thought I was getting a steal, getting a cheap, quality DH for a team I expected to contend in 2012. He simmed like crap, and my team wasn't doing much, so I sent him down to my reserve roster when I started dealing away my vets to keep his rookie status. Then he played like crap in real life. Still young enough to provide me with a decent bat in the future, but not as excited with this pick as I was last winter.
2012 Summer Draft
1.21 - David Dahl OF 3.21 - Donn Roach SP 4.14 - Freddy Galvis SS 4.28 - Daniel Rosenbaum SP
First draft that I considered a "rebuild" draft. I love Dahl. 5 tool player who tore up rookie ball last year. Some scouts are calling him the "next Trout," which probably means he won't get out of AA ball. Not sure if Roach's future will be in the rotation or the bullpen, but with his insane ground ball rate, he has a future in the major leagues. Galvis was a bit of a risky pick with the suspension and all, but I fell in love with his glove. Played superbly in winter ball, and could be my starting SS as early as this year. I drafted Rosenbaum because I was looking to add a lefty starter to my system. He reminds me of John Lannan, in that he doesn't have overpowering stuff but gets solid numbers. Recently taken my Colorado in the Rule V draft, which scares me a bit, but at least he'll see some ML time this year. Received decent ZiPS. Only downside to this pick is that I was debating between him and Avasail Garcia. This was when Garcia was still in the minors, and would've been a steal in the late fourth round. Oh well. You win some, you lose some.
2012 Winter Draft
1.3 - Dorssys Paulino SS
Love Dorssys. Real young and unlikely to stick at SS, but by all accounts his bat will easily play at 3B. Overlooked Soler and didn't realize he was available, but still may have taken Paulino. That's how high I am on him.
Between the draft and trades, I've turned a non-existent farm system into a decent enough one. I have some high-upside players (Dahl, Paulino, Turner), some lottery tickets (Beckham, Tate, McGuire), and some decent depth guys. The work isn't done yet, but I'm proud of where my reserve roster has come in the past year.

Off the top of my head:
2009 Winter Draft - Aaron Miller LHP, Dodgers - the guy had some promise then some injury issues. As a lefty with above average velocity he will always get a second chance in the pen if starting doesn't work out
2010 Summer Draft 1st round - Alex Colome - traded to Detroit 2nd Round - Matt Davidson 3rd Round - Brad Emaus - traded to Washington?
2010 Winter Draft Jose Iglesias
2011 Summer Draft 1st Round - Francisco Lindor 2nd Round - Daniel Corcino 3rd Round (a)- Allen Webster 3rd Round (b) - Pat Corbin 4th Round - Francisco Martinez
2011 Winter Draft Mason Williams
2012 Summer Draft 1st Round - traded pick for Casey Crosby and Scott Rolen 2nd Round - Jorge Alfaro 2nd Round - Lance McCuellers, Jr. 3rd Round - Lucas Sims 4th Round - Matt Carpenter
Overall I am pleased with my drafting. I used 3/5 of my 2011 draft to get CJ Wilson. I used 2/3 of my 2010 draft to help get Gavin Floyd, Huston Street and another pitcher I can't remember. Lindor, Williams and Davidson will be Top 100 prospects this year. Webster probably will be with McCuellers and Sims have a chance. Iglesias still hasn't developed the bat for the majors, but is just going to be 23 this season. I am tempted to play him anyway if I can get a defensive projection that is the equivalent of "baseball porn" which is how one writer described his fielding. Matt Carpenter is the closest I have come to drafting for the near term. He will be the first pick of mine to be on my active roster but hopefully he will begin to be joined in the near future.
I think my biggest disappointmentwas Jeff drafting Zunino. I really thought he was going to cap what I felt was a very good draft.
I may have switched the order of a couple of guys but I am too lazy to scroll through all the threads to find for certain. You get the gist of it though.

I was looking at the draft history and I regret how I handled a couple of the early drafts. There was a stretch where I didn't have a pick 2 years in a row. I'm pretty happy with some of the picks I've made.
