Did the Brewers really have 12 3rd round picks in this draft? And if so, how?

Yeah, Sean did. He made a bunch of trades and back then people were trading picks like crazy. Also, back then if you got into a bidding war with another team during free agency, they could bribe you to drop out. That lasted about 2 seasons I think before we pit the kibosh on that. But I think this was the main reason we instituted a Pick Limit (which by the way has been raised to 12 during the Summer... I forgot to mention that on the Rules Changes thread on the last message board).

Sean really did a good job with those 12 picks.... 3. Travis Bowyer 5. Dana Eveland 7. Zack Jackson 9. George Kottaras 11. Charles Thomas 14. Jake Stevens 21. Tony Sipp 22. Elijah Dukes 25. Jason Vargas 26. Anthony Lerow 28. Alejandro Machado 30. Jake Gautreau So the best player they got was Jason Vargas? George Kottaras? Elijah Dukes could have been really good I suppose. And now a selection of other picks from the round... 8. Robinson Tejeda (SEA) 12. Ryan Braun (CIN) 15. Sean Marshall (BAL) 16. Glen Perkins (PIT) 17. Hong-Chih Kuo (KC) 18. Ronny Cedeno (DET) 19. Troy Tulowitzki (TEX) 27. Wandy Rodriguez (BOS) The talent was out there Sean, too bad you missed out on nearly all of it ; (Although I guess hitting on Alex Gordon early on helped out too)

Hey! It took skill for him to have more picks that fWAR in that round! It's not easy to have 40% of the picks in a round where more than 25% of the players selected had a serviceable or better career (Kuo and Perkins are questionable...) and miss almost all of them.
And in his defense, I know Machado was a staple of his roster for years as a utility player. That's not bad for a third round pick. And Thomas was a good pick at the time. The kid had just come up and earned 2.1 fWAR in half a season with the Braves before getting traded to Oakland. And for some reason Oakland never gave him a real shot. He had 55 plate appearances and a .132 BABIP, and never saw the majors again.
And FYI, I think Sean traded Alex Gordon before Gordon ever got a single AB for Sean.

Haha, did you really just go and sum up all 12 of his players WAR totals?

Haha, did you really just go and sum up all 12 of his players WAR totals? No, I am pretty sure they add up to more than 12 WAR, I just don't think it's by much.

3. Travis Bowyer - (-0.1) 5. Dana Eveland - 3.8 7. Zack Jackson - 0 9. George Kottaras - 2.6 11. Charles Thomas - 1.6 14. Jake Stevens - 0 21. Tony Sipp - (-1.0) 22. Elijah Dukes - 2.6 25. Jason Vargas - 5.9 26. Anthony Lerow - 0 28. Alejandro Machado - 0.1 30. Jake Gautreau - 0
Total = 15.5
12. Ryan Braun - 32.9 15. Sean Marshall - 10.0 17. Hong-Chih Kuo - 6.1 19. Troy Tulowitzki - 25.6 27. Wandy Rodriguez - 18.5
From the time of Milwaukees first 3rd round pick (3.3 - Travis Bowyer) until the end of the draft, there were 26 players picked (Houston had 2 skipped picks). Milwaukee had 12 of these picks, yet there highest WAR player this far (Jason Vargas - 5.9) was only the 6th highest in the round...
Also, there were some notable others: 8. Robinson Tejeda - 3.9 16. Glen Perkins - 5.1 18. Ronny Cedeno - 1.9

Also, no hard feelings to Sean, I've still only had 5 players in 4 years of drafting be receive a sim-able projection (Alex Avila, Jason Kipnis, Tom Milone, Mike Fiers, Dom Brown), and Milone/Fiers both had usable lines the year I drafted them, so we may all be making fun of me in 2016 or something

I'm bad at drafting. It's one of the reasons I tend to trade my 1st round picks often. Don't get me wrong, my very first draft pick ever was Cole Hamels, so I'm not a total idiot. The real lesson is that picks do you no f'n good unless you know how to draft. I'm still bad at it because I like a particular player type that just happens to be bad.
