I have 2 of the first 5 picks? How the hell did I do something good???
Good year to have that many top picks, too.

This is Joe, I'm editing this comment to put a list of ineligible players in the top comment, so everyone knows who can't be taken. Please let us know if you have anyone else that needs to be added to this list.

Threw me off - I don't even remember being a wild card team. This will be a legendary draft. Now I have the 23rd pick!!
Miami asked about that pick at #5 John. Do you happen to remember that trade date? From MIA to LAA?

The Angels and the Fish have agreed to a deal.
Angels receive: DJ Stewart Miguel Castro Tucupita Marcano Marlins 2023 1st round pick
Marlins receive: Josh Hader $3.76 MM in 2022
Angels agree, and are sad to see Hader go.

I didn't know who any of the first 4 picks were. LOL at myself! Skenes is the best pitching prospect to come out in the draft since Strasburg in 2009. He just had one of the five best college pitching seasons of all time. And with all that said, it was still debatable if he would go in the Top 2 of this draft. This is the best MLB Draft in quite some time. The top 5 players (Crews and the 4 who were just taken) were the uncontested cream of the crop. Most people had the 3 college players slightly ahead of the 2 HS players, but that comes down to preference and belief on upside. John and I were emailing about how the next group of 10 or so players aren't as exciting, but I think the issue is that by comparison to the first 5, they're just regular ol' draftees. There's nothing wrong with them. You got some college arms that have 2-5 ceilings, a HS arm that could be better or worse, lots of up the middle bats and COF and 3B likely bats. It's just that after the first five everything pales by comparison.

Yeah, the first 5 picks all have legitimate chances to be elite players. After that, it's really a crap-shoot.

2nd of my two firsts is in.
With Langford, I did debate Max Clark. Being a Tiger fan IRL, I've grown to love Clark's huge upside. But, I decided to go chalk and take the "safe" college bat.
With my 2nd pick, there was no one I loved. I don't love any of the college arms. I like them, but I don't know if they have the upside I want in my 5th pick. None of the bats wow me. There's one bat that I really like, but he went quite a bit later in RL, so do I want to reach for him here? That's why I was hoping to trade back. Hopefully nab him and get another pick in the process. But in the end, I went for the top HS pitcher. I really didn't want to do that, either, because the risk is crazy for a high schooler, but Meyer's upside is maybe the highest out of anyone left. I figure since I was able to land a "safe" player in Langford, I could justify taking such a big risk.
We'll see how long it takes before both these guys bust.

The list was at about 15 when I went on the clock, I got it down to about 8 this morning with a clear frontrunner. And as the day went on I continued to mark people off and went with the frontrunner. What it came down to is that in the group of available players, almost all are hitters. There were 2 pitchers and I liked Waldrep significantly more than the other one, despite some people ranking him higher. I didn't like the team that drafted him nor comments about the shape of his fastball. So that left Waldrep as the only available pitcher. I figured I should pop him and see if any of the hitter fall to me at 2.05 or 2.07. I think Waldrep is being dinged due to his lack of control in 2023, which is fine. But I like that the Braves took him and that he has 2 above average breaking balls already and can already hit like 99 with the FB. I think there is less work to be done with him than other pitchers.

I really don't love how close all these players are in terms of FV. I actually spent part of my trip to Steamboat Springs watching video to narrow it down. My final 4 entering today was Waldrep (snagged by Joe), Tommy Troy, Brayden Taylor, and Arjun Nimmala.
Tommy Troy will be a big league player, I just don't like his bat. Brayden Taylor will be a big league player, but I'm not sure about his defense.
Kiley McDaniel says that Arjun Nimmala has the talent to be the best player out of this draft if everything goes well. I opted out of 2 safe 3B picks who will definitely be contributors someday and instead reached for the high upside, infinite ceiling guy.
Feels pretty good actually.

1. Being a real life Pirates fan, I guess you have to draft Skenes at 1.1, but I think Crews is the far safer pick. Not only are pitchers notoriously riskier than hitters due to arm injury, but I don’t like Skenes’s motion at all. It actually reminds me a lot of Ben Joyce’s, and looks like a ton of torque on his arm. I think Crews reaches MLB first, and is more likely to have a full career.
2. I think the quality of our drafting has gotten to the point that all of the “diamonds in the rough” are already taken. We’ve gotten halfway through round 1, and still not a single pro ball player selected. GMs are exclusively targeting the real-life draft for elite talent right out of the gate.

I think Skenes is a brilliant pick for DET in our league. I believe that the real life Pirates need the potential top-of-rotation arm more than they need another potential impact bat. This is another situation where the top 5 being so close together in makes it difficult. There are good players in the minors available. We've gotten to the point that we take the best ones each year, so there are fewer 50+ FV types running around the minors. The expansion of the Winter Draft will also start eating into those players more and more. The Winter Draft is where all the international signings get drafted meaning fewer will hold over for Summer. Haviing more picks means digging deeper and drafting mroe amateurs. It's not really my preference, but it is how you to rebuild a roster (I think LOL).

Nice steal with the 7th pick for the Cubs to get who I think is the second best SP in this class. Waldrep could be in mlb in 2024.

I love me some Yohandy Morales. I'm doing a long-term save in OOTP that's in 2030, and Yohandy has turned into one of my studs. He's on pace for 40 HR's and hitting .280 with plus defense at third.
For that reason alone, I wanted to get him later in the draft.

I failed to say anything when the pick happened, but this should be mentioned. Props to Colby for breaking my draft model. The Colt Emerson pick kind of threw me for a loop. I actually love surprises like this. It makes the league very fun. If he wasn't in my division, I would wish him and Colt the best of luck. But I kinda hope he's just medium.

You'd expect Patrick to take the slightly lowered rated player that is a Mariner, not Colby.

Since I was never able to corner the market on all players named Colby, I shifted to Colts. It seems to be working out with the other Colt I drafted so I decided to take a chance on this one. In all reality, He put up some decent numbers as a 17 year old on the national team and committed to an sec team. I love me some SEC players so I felt like he was worth the pick at 19. It was down to him and Bradfield. I like the speed with Bradfield but felt he may be too one dimensional so went with Emerson.

It's going to be interesting watching Bradfield. He's fast and plays great defense, but I'm not sure he can hit.

Bradford is bigger than Billy is/was. I think he's got a little more power in his bat. He hit 15 career homers at Vandy. I don't know how many were hit in SEC play versus out of conference games though. He did stink on The Cape last summer though. But I think he has a better idea of the strike zone. So even if he can play Top 5 CF defense, hit 240/300/360 and steal 60 bases with the new rules, I think he can be a valuable player in the 9 hole.

And just like that, the last two picks took both my realistic round one options off the board. Unbelievable that two top 100 prospects lasted this long to begin with, but, in all due respect to my fellow competitors, fuck ya both.

Just waiting for clarification from Sean on whether the guy I want to pick here is eligible. Absolutely Zimming up the draft.

For reference if people are wondering if someone is eligible, if you go to the Fangraphs Top Prospects lists an go to the team they're on.... scroll down and find their name. At the top of their little profile it will show how they came into baseball, for example:
"2021 First Round Pick Number 18" or "2022 International Signing Period"
If it says "2023 International Signing Period" they won't be eligible until this Winter. If they were born in 1997 or earlier, they are now free agents. If they were a college underclassmen who was ineligible for the MLB draft, they are ineligible. Everyone else should be draft eligible.
