After 11 seasons at the helm of the Arizona Diamondbacks, my time as a GM in NSBL has come to an end. I told Joe I wanted to write a sappy goodbye post, so hear it is...
I started playing fantasy baseball in the early 2000s and jumped in with both feet. In 2007, a friend of mine told about this new thing he joined called a keeper league. We dragged another friend in, and joined 7 random strangers in a Yahoo league called Playin' for Keeps. That league had a commish that was a little fast and loose with the rules, but I did meet another baseball fan through that league, Mark Karpinski. In late 2011, he told me about a league with 30 GMs, free agency, minor league rosters, trades, drafts, arbitrations, the works. I had no idea what I was in for, but I was very interested and joined at the tail end of the 2011 season. I had enough time to get the feel for the DMB program, MP files, etc... It's been an awesome run. 7 playoff trips in 11 seasons and 2 World Series titles in the last 3 seasons.
A few specific thank yous:
Mark, thanks for the invite to NSBL, and thanks for your friendship. I'm glad you broke through your ALDS funk this year (on the 8th try), and I'm glad we got to square off in the World Series.
Brian, you're the Ohio State to my Michigan. Thanks for being such a competitive division rival. You're my favorite Steelers fan.
Connor, thanks for being in the American League, so I could have a chance. Your lack of a World Series title is a cruel injustice. You're a fellow stat nerd, except you're much better at it, and also a great GM.
JIm, thanks for saying no when I offered to trade you Jose Altuve for Tyson Ross in July, 2014. On the long list of questionable trades I made, that would've been the worst. On a more serious note, I appreciate you. A lot of things you said drove me bonkers, but you're a rare breed.
Joe, thanks for all the blood, sweat and tears poured into this league over the years. The league wouldn't exist if it wasn't for you. You're a good dude.
Sean, same to you. I know by the time I joined NSBL, you were more behind the scenes than you were in the early days of the league, but thank you!
