There are some unexpected changes happening right now. Hayes decided it was time to move on from NSBL. It was an unexpected choice from him, but not one that he hasn't thought about for awhile. Life changes and the league changes and sometimes league doesn't fit life.
I am currently brainstorming some solutions to our vacancy problem. No one wants to play in a league where max participation is still only 85%. No one wants to bid against a committee member acting "in the best interests" of some team. We know it looks bad, but we also don't currently have another system to fall back on.
I would like to take a 1 week break after T1 completes to see if we can fill a couple of these vacant teams and/or devise a different set of FA guidelines for the GM-less franchises.
My apologies for delaying this announcement. I've been processing everything that I'm learning.
No ideas are bad ideas. I'm willing to spend some money on updating the website. I'm open to new ideas about recruitment. And I'm completely open to constructive criticism that can lead us to solutions.
That's what's up.

It's not ideal for me, and I don't want it to be a long-term solution, but I can resume sim duties. I've got the know-how and experience, etc. It might be the most seemless transition. If there are other options or volunteers for it or the open committee spot, that's fine. But I love this league and I will rage against the dying of the light.

Happy to help in whatever manner I can, this league has provided me with so much in the last ~15 years, I'm more than happy to give back where possible.

UPDATE - Due to the diligence of some of our GMs, we have some potential candidates to fill open teams. I'm also going to meet next week with one of my Magic friends who works as a web developer and I have also talked to my co-worker who is the web developer for my company. The goal is to set up a blind bidding system that requires minimal effort from any committee member.
My vision is that we eventually reach a point where we let automation do most of the heavy lifting and the rules committee then becomes more about quality of life tweaks and recruiting and league interaction. It's not gonna happen quickly, so we need to decide how to make it thru this season.
Overall, I'm optimistic. I'm leaving room for the worst case scenario, but I think I can get a lot done over the weekend and on Monday so that I have even more information. The goal is to have a league with a low barrier to entry overall while emphasizing a GMs willingness to do player research while also minimizing the burnout of both GMs and league leadership.
In a perfect world, Jim can have 4 more kids and still find time to rage against the sim machine.

That will help; thank you for your hard work. But there are other issues with NSBL that I hope can also be considered if we want to make it another 20 years. There’s a reason many Diamond Mind leagues have waiting lists of guys wanting to get in, but we have had a steadily growing number of GM vacancies we cannot fill.
1. One of the biggest issues was a lack of draft rounds, causing our reserves to be thin. This has become a prospect-hoarding league, to the point that it’s such a headache talking trade that many GMs have all but stopped trying. Expanding the draft this year should help, but its taken years of campaigning to get that, and we won’t see the eventual liquidity of prospects- and hopeful increased trading- for another few years.
2. There have been a handful of unpopular changes here over the years that got ramroded through anyway because 1 or 2 prominent GMs wanted them. Our CE system is a perfect example. Every DM league I’ve seen has a way to significantly extend at least a few of your best players. Here, we go to all this work and calculations for only 1 extra year tops, which doesn’t approximate anything in real life. It’s kind of stupid. It might get players to FA quicker, but now that’s causing problems. I’ve long suggested shorter max contract lengths instead- to have players hit FA twice during their prime, and avoid albatross contracts that make teams unappealing to prospective GMs- but that’s fallen on deaf ears. That’s just one example of weird, somewhat stubborn rules we have here that most leagues don’t.
3. The elephant in the room is that there’s been a little too much fuckery on the parts of some Committee members over the years, and I know that’s made people leave. It can be cool to do a league with real friends from the outside world, but that’s also caused a lot of problems when people don’t want to intervene if someone is either throwing their weight around, or tasks that need completed for NSBL on schedule aren’t getting done, and there’s no communication about it.
As we try to “fix” NSBL, just be careful to ensure we are considering the underlying root issues of the league, rather than overly focusing on the straw that may have broken the camel’s back in this particular case. Thanks so much.

1) Draft Length
The limited draft length was to coincide with our limited overall roster size. I would, as a general rule, agree that we didn't grow our draft soon enough after we started expanding the roster size. I would argue that the actual reason we reached this point has more to do with tradable picks. Probably some of column A and some of column B. I feel like there would be more willingness to trade if the talent distribution was more equal. This issue has solutions.
2) Contracts and CEs
I'm going to open this response with some snark, but it's not intended to be dismissive. Shorter contracts and more extension years seem to be at odds with each other. How long is a significant extension? If you can keep them until they're 31 on extension, then they still won't hit FA twice in their prime on 5 year deals. Is the difference between 5 years max and 7 years max really that much different? I think shorter contracts are a good idea, but I just question the actual impact of that change. Signing aging players to a 5 year deal is still just as silly as signing them to a 7 year deal. My point is that I don't think it fixes albatross contracts. Again, all this has fixes.
3) "Professionalism"
Like, yeah, it's frustrating when communication breaks down. My argument will always be that you get what you pay for. Free league. Volunteers run it. Life happens and people miss deadlines or make mistakes. I see all types of "pushing around" happening on the message board and I feel the free passes have been spread around to most GMs here. My hope is that the automation I'm going to be spending time and money on creating will help with the deadlines issues.
These are all areas that will be addressed again in the near future. Please be mindful that you can't change everything all at once. Draft length was just expanded and I would like to see what impact it has while we make other changes/fixes. Though I don't think it's appropriate to change max contract length right this moment, I could see the argument for implementing it as soon as next offseason. I truly believe technology will lead to less fuckery.
Once we get past our current scramble, I would definitely be up for discussion/debate regarding any and all of areas of concern. And I apologize if this all seems like long-winded procrastination. I will definitely come back to these items.
