Took the plunge and joined Fangraphs with a $20.00 membership today. I'm not up to the level of Sean's $50.00 ad free membership, but it's a start.
I think it's important to start supporting these sites that are still around. With a number of sites gone, John Sickels off writing horror novels now, and 90% of local prospect articles I find buried behind paywalls, this has really become an invaluable site to me.
A good friend of mine is very high up in the Altoona Curve (AA Pirates) and he said that this minor league "restructuring" basically amounts to a corporate takeover by MLB of the minor league system. He believes that someday, minor league sites will only exist in Florida and Arizona, and possibly run opposite the MLB season in winter.
I'm blown away. Minor league baseball means so much to countless small- to mid-sized cities across the country, and is a significant source of revenue for these communities. Unfortunately, it feels like MLB views them simply as sunk costs. But I think they are making a huge mistake.
1. The failure rate in professional baseball is so high that, by eliminating dozens and dozens of teams, they're also curtailing the number of roster spots where prospects have a chance to surprise and contribute. Over time, I think this has to dilute the MLB talent base.
2. They make an assumption that if they kill a minor league club, residents will continue to support the MLB club. And that's not always the case. For example, outside of Allegheny County (Pittsburgh), the Pirates' next highest-attending county to games at PNC Park is way over in Blair (Altoona). If you remove the Curve, there's a good chance the Pirates lose a lot of their grassroots support for the MLB club as well.
This is a sad trend to an industry I thought was very safe,

well, the Portland Sea Dogs signed a 10 year affiliate contract with the Red Sox, about a week ago... so... im thinking maybe the only affiliated ball being in FLA and AZ is a bit of a stretch. Corp take over of the minors, sure. Meg and Ben @ Fangraphs wrote a SABR nominated piece son the change to the minors. I highly recommend that work. plus JJ Cooper did a couple podcasts talking about what it means.
I think it was a heavy handed way to get some affiliates to fix their damn ball parks. The amount of high quality baseball probably won't lessen, but affiliated will. Support your local indie ;league team! and yes, be like Jim support Fangraphs. Im on the fence about getting the athletic, cause I want to read Keith Laws work.

I was texting Ed the other day and told him I was thinking of actually registering for a Reddit account cause I know they have some minor league boards. I'm wondering if one has taken over the daily posts like Sickels used to have. I loved his lists, but outsourcing a lot of content in that way is what I miss the most.
My new job is about 30min from Danville, VA, the former home of the Danville Braves, an Atlanta affiliate. But it's one that lost their sponsorship so it's now going to stay in the Appy league that's becoming a college summer league. Still won't be the Cape Cod League though where the real prospects go. But I think Roanoke, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem will be less than 2 hours away each way, so I'll still have true minor league options close. More than I had in Denver actually.

Im on the fence about getting the athletic, cause I want to read Keith Laws work. I've got 5 guest passes for the Athletic, good for 30 days, if you want to check it out. If nothing else, you'd get all of Keith Law's stuff for this off-season. Let me know. I've never redeemed one, but I'm sure I can figure out how.

While I miss having a MLB team nearby, I love having several MiLB teams nearby since I moved to Nashville. Bummed I never made it to Jackson before they lost affiliation, but hoping to make it down to Huntsville this season for to check out them out in their first season.
