Hello to all,
I'm Charles, the newest STL Cards owner.
Thanks for having me!
A little about me:
I'm 40 years old, married and have 3 marvellous boys, aged 11-10-7. I'm a high school teacher from Thetford Mines, Qc, about 1hr outside Québec City. I teach English as a Second Language to francophone students of grade 7 and 8. We also have a dual-program, where I also teach those kids English Language Arts so they can reach college and be fluent in English as much as possible. I also am am occasional tour guide, where I hop on a bus and bring students (from other schools) to New York, Boston and Chicago. I love that as a part-time job, makes me get away from routine. That's also how I got to meet Mr. Bersani, the one who told me there was an opening here.
I'm mostly into hockey, being a true-die-hard-Canadian. Huge Montreal Canadiens fan, but I also tolerate other teams, so to say (except the Leafs and the Bruins). I've been in a hockey simulation league for 16 years now, so I have some experience as to how this stuff "should" or "could" work.
I like to watch sports, but I'm not a sports nerd for all sports. I have some mild interest in basketball (Go Raptors!) and I'm very little interested in football (except the Superbowl, for 2 quarters or so, I usually go to bed after the halftime show - I'll see the score the next day on the news and be like "ok, one less thing").
As for baseball, I'm slowly diving back into being a fan. My heart stopped beating for baseball when my Montreal Expos left in '04. Actually, it had already slowed down a bit before when Loria became the owner and screwed us all. If you want to get me going, just say the Expos weren't the best team in '94, year of the strike, and I'll be all over you. Also, if you were a fan of the Pirates and Doug Drabek and Andy Van Slyke or a fan of the Braves with their top4 starting pitchers, or if you liked Howard Johnson or Dale Murphy and Lenny Dykstra or Ryne Sandberg...you'd probably hit a nerve there somewhere . I also have disliked the Yankees as far back as I can think, notably when they signed A-Rod and his yearly salary was more than all of the Expos players combined. I've never been a Yankee fan, never will be. I only respect Jeter, and even then...
When the Expos left, I jumped on the Red Sox bandwagon, mainly because they had Pedro. Then, I jumped on the Cubs' bandwagon after I went to one of their games. I got interested in both teams the year they both won the WS, so I guess that helped spike my interest in those teams as well as baseball in general. I've been to a few other ballparks, Montreal of course (could get a bleacher ticket for $5 and then move to home plate - no wonder they left), Toronto, Cleveland, Mets and Yankees (both old and new for both teams), Philadelphia, and Baltimore mainly. I was planning on going on a West Coast trip last September (LAD and SF) but Covid hit, and, well, the rest is history.
Favourite movie: Forrest Gump
Favourite books: any sports biographies. I really liked Angré Agassi's story as well as Clint Malarchuk's.
I don't have much knowledge or background about baseball, so I'm planning to ease into things, and counting on your help to have some fun here. My closest sim league experience in baseball I have is playing MLB The Show on PS4, and I've recently registered online on a Sabermetrics 101 class (I had free time during the pandemic). It might take a helluva long time before I make my first trade, this is my first baseball sim league and, quite honestly, I don't want nor need any vultures circling around me or my team roster, waiting to get the best of a rookie GM. I am open to suggestions and comments about my team, what I lack, what I need, what my strengths and weaknesses are. Please contact me, I'm looking forward to your help and insights.
My plan as of now is to get to know you guys, get down to the league rules and what nots. I don't have a TON of time per day to decipher everything over a weekend or so (three kids and a wife that works in the health care system, every second weekend), but I'm interested in diving into this challenge and easing my way towards winning the last game of the season, eventually.
If you have any questions or want to reach out to me, go right ahead. charlesbaseballsim@gmail.com
Until next time, stay safe guys.
