I mentioned it a few years ago, when we first changed to this new message board. I don't remember why, but it got shot down. Now after seeing it used in the MLBSA, I want to bring it back up. Is there any way we can get individual team sub-forums on the message board? Not necessarily for any official reason; I personally prefer the trading blocks all in one forum like we do here. I just like it to post things like prospect rankings, season recaps, trade history, really whatever us nerdy people want to write about. That way if people want to read it, cool. If not, also cool. But it's at least all documented if you want it documented.

I like this idea. Seems like a spot that could be good for just posting crap you want to talk to someone about (since we like this sorta stuff and spend time doing this), but nobody really cares about your fantasy team, so your friends/spouse/kids don't really want to hear it. I'd read anything others post about their squads.

I dont mind this stuff bogging down the main forum. I probably woundnt notice all the horn tootin if it wasnt on the main forum. I enjoy reading all the nerdy stuff some gms write about their team. It makes me feel less nerdy when I post it about my team.

I have been experimenting with creating these. I'm not done yet, and for now I've got all the sub-boards hidden until I am done, but I worry about stuff not being seen by the intended audience. I like the idea of having my own place to post stuff too (back when the league started, it was run through an MSN Group. Anyone remember those? And many of us created our own group page for our own teams), I do it in MLBSA as well.
But I don't like Trading Blocks being posted there. I like the idea of a one-stop-shop for all the trading blocks. I have to use the "Recent Forum Posts" option at MLBSA and it's a pain because it's reverse chronological order and then the things I am looking for are harder to find. Especially if there has been a rash of activity. The other day I logged on and had to go three pages back just to find out where I had last read. I also sorta like the conversations that start here when people start posting their entire team's projected ZiPS and stuff in one thread. I don't see that on MLBSA boards.
I guess it just feels more like a community when we're all forced to post in the same board. Like elementary school. Once we have options to hang out in different cliques (boards) we'll lose touch with each other. Think of all the time Jim is going to have to spend just finding different boards to annoy people on! Think of Jimmy.

I agree with all that. In my first post, I even said that I prefer how we do trading blocks. I just want somewhere where I can keep things like my trading history, draft history, and even my super-nerdy all-time stats sheets where they can either be seen or not seen. Just things for me to keep track of. Sure, I already keep track of those things, but a place where I can put it to have at hand would be useful for me.

Any movement as to if the individual team forums might happen? I've enjoyed having my own team forum in another league to keep track of stats, draft history, off-season moves, trades etc.

As someone who h.a.t.e.s. the layout of MLBSA with a passion of 1,000 burning suns, the only way I’m cool with this is if all the important stuff- like trade blocks, etc- is still posted on the main page, as some people here mentioned.
Part of the reason Brian and I (sexy co-GMs of the Padres there) don’t talk trade is because you have to click through 29 damn webpages just to see who all is available, and it sucks.
If guys wants to get hard over their own collection of prospects, cool. As long as the stuff GMs need to see is still in very accessible threads as it is now.

When I get bored at work I'll scroll through the team boards and read some of the things they leave there, but I almost never scroll through the forums looking to see who is available for trade. |

I wouldn't mind IM. I have my Gmail open pretty much all day at work, and do chat with some people here at the league. Super convenient. And if I don't have it open, it immediately goes to my phone.
I agree about finding email addresses, which is why I have mine in my signature.

Couldn't all this tracking of stuff just be done thru Google Docs? They can be linked to a sticky post on the forum. They can be linked to the team pages on the website. That way people can track their stuff on Docs and we can still have open discussions that clutter our forum. Seems great!

I'm one of those teachers that like the idea of Google Docs, but I'm also one of those teachers who has a hard time giving up some of the features of Word and Excel. as a college student, and as a Technology integrator / School Tech guy I've not found anything that google doc can't do. and for 6-12 students Google Classroom is a great course management tool. added bonus, our districts are poor and even with edu discount MS is too expensive. I hate using word now, its bloated and frustrating. office 365??, oh what suck. I'm just an old curmudgeon. Two features I love about Google Docs: 1. Auto-save 2. The ability to share and collaborate on docs For everything else, I'll admit... I've just been working with MS products for so long, anything else just looks and feels foreign. With my job, though, I'm forced to use Google Docs, so I'm sure I'll come around soon. |

If our District ever tries to go exclusively that way to save money by no longer registering Microsoft Office, I am going to go berserk. wow, I'm glad you guys work in rich districts... We stopped buying office products in 2011. Are you guys using Class Management Systems? Moodle / other..?? just curious. I have no idea what those are, so I guess my answer is no. |

I'd chime in on the discussion here, but I'm afraid that I would just end up insulting Jim because unfriendly banter is the default mode of communication in the NL Central.
I have a lot of respect for education and the people who have task themselves with teaching our youths. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to stay on top of the methods and psychology and topics that you deal with in addition to having to teach numerous subjects to numerous different individuals.
I just want to say this in response to Jim's over-the-top comment: You're better than that. You're better than MS Office and your students deserve better than MS Office. This statement is slightly laced with humor, but I'm not lying to you. Office products are garbage. Comfort is a trap. Be better and use better tools.

Spare us, Sean.
A lot of people are incredibly well-versed in MS Office after having used it for so many years. We know how to make exceptional products from it.
Many of the new "trendy" online/app products do not offer nearly the degree of customization, nor cross-compatibility that the Office suite still does. The majority of administrators I have seen continue to push and pimp new technology initiatives, not because there's any actual research proving they are better, but more because it looks good on their own resumes.
Hey, if people want to use those new things, more power to them. But you're way out of line talking down to people that still prefer to use them. We can do some pretty awesome things with that Suite.

I think that’s true to a point, Jason, but I’ve also seen kids get burned out and agitated when they are using tech every single period.
Like anything, I think balance and moderation gives the best results, although I’m sure there are some full-tech teachers that can use it quite well.

I keep most of the league files backed up on Dropbox. DMB program, season zip files, web pages, etc. But I have a work Dropbox and trying to set up two Dropboxes on the same computer for work is a pain in the ass, so I also have Google Drive, and I use that for everyday use files. I keep my personal roster files there, prospect list, my working roster file, and my tax shit. Anything I need both at work and home is there.
